AGRA Inc Acquires Geonex Corporation To Create International Geographic Information
Systems / Spatial Information Leader
Clearwater, Florida, March 8, 2000 - AGRA Inc. (AGR.TSE) today announced that it has
acquired the assets of Geonex Corporation of St. Petersburg Florida, a privately owned
company that provides a wide range of data conversion and computerized mapping services to
private and public sector clients in North America and worldwide. The purchase price was not
disclosed.
Geonex will be consolidated with AGRA Inc.’s Clearwater Florida based subsidiary AGRA
Baymont which is a world leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data conversion
services. The combined operation, which will be led by AGRA Baymont President Bob Brown,
will have annual revenues of approximately US$ 25,000,000 and will employ approximately 700
employees working in four offices worldwide.
“The combination of AGRA Baymont and Geonex creates a new leader in the GIS data
conversion industry,” said AGRA President & CEO Peter Janson. “This represents an important
step forward in our plans to create a world leading full service provider of spatial information
solutions from GIS data conversion to web-based spatial data management for clients in the
government, utility, telecommunications and related sectors.”
In recent years, more businesses and government agencies have begun to rely on spatial
information and the supporting technologies, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS),
and Remote Sensing, to support their operations. At the same time, traditional mapping and
charting disciplines have evolved from a largely manual and paper based craft to electronic geo-
spatial database technology which is increasingly integrated with modern information
technology (IT) business systems.
Converting traditional paper mapping data into a digital form and building, managing, and
exploiting databases with spatial or geographical content is a specialized and often difficult
undertaking. Consequently, many users of spatial data have turned to consultants and service
vendors for assistance. Both AGRA Baymont and Geonex serve this market by providing
expertise in the design and creation of spatial data products.
AGRA Baymont provides its clients in the utilities, telecommunications and other sectors with
data conversion and enterprise-wide business solutions for spatial information. Its services
include data conversion, high resolution scanning, records analysis and preparation, land base
development, project management, backlog data maintenance, on-line data maintenance, data
migration, quality inspection, management, AM/FM/GIS model review, positional enhancement,
application development and GIS consulting.
Geonex offers clients in the private and government sectors with value added services
including cadastral mapping, environmental mapping, photogrammetry and digital orthophoto
creation, project management, technical assistance/transfer, equipment acquisition and training.
Geonex is one of the foremost authorities in base mapping, photo interpretation, imagery
analysis, photogrammetry, AM/FM/GIS project development and production, scanning, remote
sensing and image processing. Its clients include utility companies, national government
agencies, state, regional and municipal government agencies and commercial industries.
“The acquisition of Geonex is the first stage of Baymont’s strategic plan for growth,” said Brown.
Geonex brings local resources that are complementary to the services, projects, and expertise
at Baymont. We look forward to the exceptional value that will be available to customers and the
industry.”
