ESRI and GO2 Provide Dial-a-Map Capabilities to Cellular Phone Users
Redlands, California-An exciting breakthrough in Internet technology has allowed ESRI, the foremost developer of geographic information system (GIS) software, to provide real-time mapping capabilities to mobile telephone users.

ESRI is using its Internet mapping software, ArcIMS, to serve maps that are converted to the generic wireless applications protocol (WAP) to cellular telephone users via GO2 Web site portals.

Comments Kees van Loo, ESRI’s telecommunications industry manager, “The potential commercial opportunities provided by the wedding of cellular telephones with graphical display capabilities to GIS in WAP format and served via geoportal Web sites are enormous. In only a few short years, the mobile telephone has become an essential tool for the business community, the emergency service industry, and tens of millions of others with an ongoing need to be in touch. Now, consider the wealth of information that is provided in a map-locations, proximity, directions, distances. Most of what we do is referenced in some way to a specific place. The result of this emerging technology will stimulate the development of entirely new industries.” ESRI Nederland B.V. recently joined forces with the Dutch mobile telephone company KPN Mobiel to provide a similar service. Users can view maps on their mobile telephone display of every given address in the Netherlands, with the rest of Europe soon to follow. The maps can be zoomed in or out and panned.

It is expected that with continued technological developments and the integration of global positioning system units, real-time navigation capabilities based on actual traffic information will be available by mobile telephone in the near future.

For more than thirty years, ESRI has been the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software with more than 220,000 clients worldwide.ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than ninety countries, and more than 700 resellers and developers. ESRI’s goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them.
