ESRI Joins Wireless Applications Protocol Forum
Redlands, California-ESRI, the foremost developer of geographic information system (GIS) software is pleased to announce it has become an associate member of the Wireless Applications Protocol (WAP) Forum.

WAP is the de facto worldwide standard for providing Internet communications and advanced telephony services on digital mobile phones, pagers, personal digital assistants, and other wireless terminals.

ESRI recognizes the considerable potential the WAP Forum offers in bringing together industry leaders to provide more and better mobile-based services.

Since much of the information consumers are looking for is location dependent, such as routing, traffic information, weather, directory service, and so on, the inclusion of GIS capabilities in mobile devices will add significant benefit.

“We also see a great future for GIS-based WAP technology in business applications such as fleet management, dispatch systems, precision agriculture, and defense,” comments Kees van Loo, ESRI’s telecommunications industry manager. “This technology will help them make their businesses more successful and increase their return on investment.”

ESRI plans to support WAP through its ArcIMS software, a powerful Internet solution for creating, designing, and managing Web sites with mapping and GIS capabilities. This will allow users and developers to create map-based WAP applications or applications that need GIS functionality.

ESRI recently introduced ArcPad, a handheld Windows CE-based field GIS system that also provides great opportunities for WAP mapping applications.

“Combining ESRI’s WAP mapping capabilities with ArcPad will provide users with even greater flexibility to take full advantage of today’s mobile computing capabilities,” concludes Van Loo.

For more than thirty years, ESRI has been the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software with more than 220,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than ninety countries, and more than 900 resellers and developers. ESRI’s goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them.
