Geocoding Technology Can Help Prevent Potentially Deadly Gas Explosions; Advanced Software Diminishes Threat to Public Safety
BOSTON, May 18, 2000--Recent news reports have covered a rash of home gas explosions. An advanced spatial database capability known as geocoding, which was pioneered by Vality Technology, is available to help utility companies accurately track the location of gas and power lines and prevent excavation accidents to help keep families safe.

American homeowners are encouraged to check with local utility companies about the underworkings of their property prior to purchasing a new home or initiating major home remodeling. However, many consumers do not bother checking, and even worse, many utility companies are not armed with the latest in geocoding technology to correlate individual home locations with utility line locations. Consequently, gas, water and electric lines are often punctured, leading to destruction of property or fatal explosions.

Vality's geocoding software, called INTEGRITY GeoLocator, enables utility companies to quickly correlate existing and potential home locations with underlying utility line locations. Using a reference database of street addresses, companies can determine and visualize precise home locations on a map. Armed with this capability, they can quickly and easily determine proximity to hazards and comply with government reporting and regulations regarding home construction.

"We pride ourselves on the fact that our products have real-world applications," said Mark Atkins, president and CEO at Vality Technology. "Vality's geocoding capabilities enable utility companies to leverage corporate databases and pinpoint locations to protect their customers from harmful accidents."

The utilities industry currently spends more than $5 billion a year on damage prevention efforts. Etak Inc., a leading provider of digital street map databases, geographic software and navigation technology, incorporates Vality's INTEGRITY GeoLocator software in its CG-Excavate technology. CG-Excavate makes it possible for utility companies to safely and efficiently define facility locations, dig locations and dig parameters. Some of the nation's largest utilities companies rely on CG-Excavate to pinpoint the exact coordinates of power and water lines so that the companies may further reduce risk in projects dealing with underground infrastructures.
