SPOT Image Newest ASPRS Partner in Education Through their Affinity Program

November 1, 2000, BETHESDA, MD: SPOT Image and the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) announce the creation of an affinity program in which ASPRS members receive a 10% discount on purchases of SPOT satellite imagery. Under the new program, SPOT Image will contribute two percent of all data purchases made by individual ASPRS members to the ASPRS Education Initiative as part of the Society's new Partners in Education Program.

The savings on satellite image purchases for ASPRS members can range from $75 to $440 per SPOT product ordered. The discount is effective as of November 1, 2000, and is for all standard Level 1 and SPOTView products that are not already covered by a larger discount, or by a contractual agreement with SPOT.

"We are doubly pleased that SPOT has joined the Partners in Education Program, and that ASPRS members will benefit, as will our education initiative," said ASPRS President Alan Mikuni. "SPOT has set an example that I hope other Sustaining Member companies will follow in supporting our outreach efforts. If our industry is to flourish, we need to build upon the next generation of practitioners and users."

"Significant barriers to industry growth include the lack of an adequately trained workforce and the need for a more knowledgeable customer base," noted ASPRS Executive Director Jim Plasker, referring to one of the early findings of the current ASPRS/NASA Ten-Year Industry Forecast. He went on to say, "SPOT's participation as a Partner in Education is important in that it supports the ASPRS effort to address these strategic industry concerns."

ASPRS created the Partners in Education Program to support the Society's effort to educate students from K through 14, as well as the public, about the modern uses of remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and photogrammetry. (See http://www.asprs.org for more information about the Program.) The ASPRS mission is to advance the knowledge of and improve the understanding about the mapping sciences and to promote the responsible applications of photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, and supporting technologies. Through the Partners in Education Program, ASPRS Sustaining Members provide direct support to the ASPRS education agenda through tax-free donations.
