West Virginia Purchases SPOT Statewide Image Map
RESTON, VA - The West Virginia Dept of Health and Human Services (WVDHHS)
purchased a statewide digital "image map" created from current SPOT
satellite imagery. This is the most up-to-date, consistent quality statewide
coverage that has been produced since the previous West Virginia statewide
SPOT coverage in 1994/95. Other Federal and state agencies, individuals,
commercial companies or organizations desiring access to the image map
should contact SPOT Image Corporation directly at (703-715-3100).
"The West Virginia coverage is part of our new "SPOT USA Select" program
that covers the entire lower 48 state area of the US," explains Gene
Colabatistto, president of SPOT Image Corporation. "The unique low cost and
licensing flexibility put this product line on a par with other commonly
used geospatial databases, and makes imagery available and readily useable
for the first time to much larger audiences."
"We are excited about the new up-to-date imagery because it will be an
integral part of our Source Water Assessment and Protection Program,"
explained Dana Elkins, GIS Manager for WVDHHS.
The West Virginia image map is being created from 10 meter resolution
imagery, currently being acquired by the SPOT satellite series. The imagery
will be processed to a high degree of map accuracy, and formatted for easy
use in desktop mapping and geographic information systems (GIS). Other
organizations desiring a license for this satellite image map should contact
SPOT Image Corporation directly at (703-715-3100) for information.
West Virginia statewide coverage was created by SPOT for government and
private sector clients in 1994/95. This older database is now being made
available to WVDHHS, and other interested licensees of the current image
map. With both image data sets, users can quickly and easily identify and
map natural and man-made changes that have occurred anywhere in the state.
SPOT Image Corporation, headquartered in Reston, Va., is the world's leading
supplier of remote sensing information databases. The global SPOT system
includes multiple Earth observation satellites, 24 ground receiving stations
worldwide and more than 100 international distributors. SPOT is the most
experienced provider of commercial satellite imagery and information
products, with 14 years of continuous operations and over 7 million archived
images collected since 1986.
