New HSRC Development Directory launched

South Africa (Human Sciences Research Council, November 7, 2000) - The Programme for Development Research (PRODDER) at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) yesterday (7 November 2000) launched the 10th edition of its biannual development directory that focuses on South African development organisations.

The PRODDER Directory is the most comprehensive development publication of its kind on any geographical region in Africa and has become a much sought-after reference tool on the Southern African development situation. In fact, each edition catalogues a piece of history as the Southern African region moves from an era of conflict and confrontation to peace and potential prosperity.

"From information gathered by the project, it is clear that there are a number of areas in which there is cause for concern. For example, although the problem of AIDS is enormous in KwaZulu-Natal, only a small number of organisations are working in the field of AIDS in that province (31 out of a total of 196). Also, despite the fact that so many people have been disenfranchised for so long and the local government elections are just around the corner, there are very few organisations in South Africa that deal with voter education (only 18, with none recorded in the Northern Cape and Western Cape).

"Although NGOs, CBOs and other development organisations are experiencing funding problems, they still play a significant and vital role in development, social awareness, empowerment and poverty relief at grassroots level in South Africa. It is our aim, with PRODDER, to support their endeavours by bringing to light their activities this impacts positively on the morale of many unsung heroes and heroines, and also guides funders, foundations and companies with corporate citizenship policies as to where to play a role in building a stronger nation," says Yzette Terreblanche, co-ordinator of PRODDER.

The new South African Development Directory 2001 is divided into six main parts. The first part, which is the background to the directory information, consists of foreword contributions by among others Dr Zola Skweyiya, Minister of Social Development, Mr. Paul Andre de la Porte, Acting Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme, and Mr. Abie Ditlhake, Executive Director of the South African National NGO Coalition. The second part contains the contact detail of national government ministries, while the third part consists of 9 provincial chapters that each include the following information per province: GIS map, the provincial government, sectoral index and development-related organisations in the province. Part Four provides information on international development organisations with offices in South Africa, while Part Five lists diplomatic representation in South Africa. The sixth part consists of Geographical Information System (GIS) maps of organisations listed in this publication, in combination with some of the mentioned focus areas.

To date PRODDER has published nine development directories covering the South and Southern African development scenario, the last being the 2000 edition published in December 2000. Each of these publications made an important contribution to the development debate in South and Southern Africa by concentrating on the development organisations contributing to the region's development effort.

Through this publication, as with every other previous edition, it is PRODDER's objective to give the South African development sector and its roleplayers the necessary local and international exposure to enhance the development effort in the country.

The PRODDER Directory is available at the HSRC Bookshop on tel: (012) 302- 2103 or e-mail: 1/2 HYPERLINK "mailto:sdplessis@hsrc.ac.za" 3/4sdplessis@hsrc.ac.za. The Directory costs R250,00 and the subscription to the Internet version costs R350,00.
