HJW Awarded Third Contract to Map Fairfield-Suisun
Oakland, CA - HJW, Inc. (www.hjw.com) has won its third contract to provide digital
orthophotography and planimetric mapping for the Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District (the
District) and the cities of Fairfield and Suisun City (the Cities). This project will update
the maps that HJW compiled for the District and the Cities twice within the last ten years.
Aerial acquisition is scheduled for Spring 2001.
Funded jointly by the District and the Cities in 1991, HJW completed the first West Coast
mapping project to use an airborne Geographic Positioning System (GPS), as well as
the first digital orthophotography delivered in the area. GPS receivers mounted in
airplanes work in conjunction with receivers positioned on the ground to acquire x,y,z
coordinates, thereby necessitating less ground control and reducing overall project
expense. Digital orthophotography, or digitally rectified images, produce the precision of
vector maps combined with the rich information found in photographs. HJW’s innovative
application of both technologies raised the bar on mapping accuracy and accessibility on
the West Coast.
“The District and Cities managers were ahead of their time by investing in cutting-edge
technology to map their cities and the sewer district,” said Bill Zeman, HJW Manager,
Consulting and Development Services, Northwestern United States. “Their commitment
to creating solid base maps for their GIS (Geographic Information System) set the
standard for what is now common practice for most public agencies throughout the
United States. Now, they’re leading the country in their resolve to keep those base
maps up to date,” he added.
HJW was contracted to update the original maps in 1995. “The first map was
immediately useful for a number of our GIS applications, such as drainage control,
emergency response and development,” said Ron Hipkiss, Environmental Engineer,
Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District. “From the onset we realized that the best way to
maintain that high level of utility was by keeping the data accurate through regular
updates,” he continued. HJW will update more than 100 ortho tiles as well as updating
the planimetric data where necessary.
A founding leader in the geospatial mapping industry, HJW offers an integrated suite of
custom professional mapping services that include: aerial photography, photogrammetry
and topographic mapping, digital orthophotography, GIS, remote sensing and forestry.
The 50 year old firm has four offices in California: Oakland, Irvine, Walnut Creek, Santa
Rosa and one in Phoenix, AZ.
