Kentucky Purchases SPOT Image Satellite Map

October 27, 2000, RESTON, VA - The State of Kentucky has purchased a statewide satellite image map produced by SPOT Image. The product is licensed for use by state, county and local government agencies, the state school system, and to provide Internet display for the public. Federal government agencies, individuals, commercial companies and other organizations desiring access to these image products should contact SPOT Image Corporation directly at (703-715-3100).

According to Susan Carson Lambert, the Executive Director of the Kentucky Governor's Office for Technology, Office of Geographic Information, (OGI) "This imagery will be invaluable to OGI for change detection to decide where to re-fly aerial photography, and as a 'fill-in' until we can get second generation DOQQs. SPOT has now made their pricing and licensing attractive enough for state GIS directors to take advantage of their imagery".

The Kentucky statewide coverage map is created from recent black and white 10 meter resolution SPOT satellite imagery processed to a high degree of map accuracy, and formatted for use in desktop mapping and geographic information systems (GIS). This coverage is part of the new "SPOT USA Select" product series () that overcomes the traditional market barriers of high price, license restrictions, delivery delays, inconsistent quality and difficult to use products. Other states which have recently purchased SPOT USA Select products include: California, West Virginia, Maine, and Pennsylvania.

SPOT USA Select programs offers complete coverage of the lower 48 United States, providing low cost and broad access to large area image databases. SPOT is the only satellite system that can provide the image quality, processing, delivery, pricing and licensing flexibility to create such a program.

SPOT Image Corporation, headquartered in Reston, Va., is the world's leading supplier of satellite image/information databases. The global SPOT system includes multiple Earth observation satellites, 24 ground receiving stations worldwide and more than 100 international distributors. SPOT is the most experienced provider of commercial satellite imagery and information products, with 14 years of continuous operations and over 8 million archived images collected since 1986.
