Ian Sutherland... MANAGING AUSTRALIA'S MAJOR PROJECTS
Jump to Website Here
A career of nearly 40 years took the Major Projects Manager of Australia's national mapping agency, AUSLIG, to Fiji, Armenia, Antarctica and all over Australia.
Ian Sutherland started working for the Commonwealth of Australia in 1962 as a cadet surveyor in Melbourne, in what was then known as the Department of Interior. Academic qualifications and registration as a land surveyor followed soon after.
Ian's early work experience was gained on some of Australia's major national projects - the Tullamarine airport extensions, microwave surveys from Townsville to Darwin, and later, boundary and engineering surveys in the Australian Capital Territory during its period of major growth.
Then followed two separate periods of secondment to Australia's foreign aid agency AIDAB (now AusAID), the second period spent as team leader on the Fiji land survey project, the largest land survey aid project of its type at the time.
Building on his early professional management experience, Ian then broadened his horizon by taking up policy and strategy development challenges with the Australian Property Group; and major management and information technology reviews in the former Australian Survey Office.
Ian took over as Regional Manager of AUSLIG's Darwin office in 1988, and three years later he became Manager of the Melbourne and Hobart offices. These placements gave Ian first-hand experience of customer and commercial imperatives.
Since returning to Canberra, Ian has spent considerable time at the senior executive level - in charge of business development in AUSLIG; as a consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in Armenia; as well as Executive Officer to the Secretary of the Department of Administrative Services.
Five years ago, from the relatively 'low risk' position as Manager of AUSLIG's Canberra office, Ian embarked on what some at the time regarded as a 'high risk' challenge - Leader of Casey Station in Antarctica. Ian's 19-month contribution to furthering Australia's national interests on the southern-most continent is a testimony to his dedication and capability.
In recent years, Ian has managed a number of major projects for AUSLIG including Y2K, the Australian Earth Resources Satellite (AIRES) project and establishment of the 100K mapping contract panel.
Ian has decided that a break away from full time work has lots of attractions and left the Public Service in April.
