InfoTech Enterprises Europe provides Betterware with an innovative e-spatial solution

InfoTech Enterprises Europe has developed a unique territory analysis tool for Betterware Plc, the largest door to door home wares company with an annual turnover of £100m. Via the internet, Betterware can now use the same Geographical Information System from any location in the UK. Betterware delivers over 2 million catalogues each week via a network of agents that each has a set ‘Distributor Walk’. Previously Betterware agents had to cope with combining the use of PAF street lists and A to Z maps in order to plan a distribution route. Often the information provided could not prevent impractical routes such as walking through rivers. Local knowledge of distribution areas was a more effective means of ensuring accurate routes, but local knowledge was not always available to the Area Managers.

Betterware decided to provide its Area Managers with a tool for territory analysis that includes accurate information and allows them not only to plan and modify distribution routes, but also to allocate agents to vacant areas. Using the same web enabled GIS, Area Managers can now input data into a central database, and manipulate spatial data from a remote distance. Hence many security issues had to be resolved to guarantee unauthorised persons would not misuse the web site and effect the database.

InfoTech Enterprises Europe focussed on the needs of Betterware by providing a consultancy service. InfoTech’s solution encompassed independent brokerage of datasets and a Geographical Information System specifically designed for Betterware that was web enabled using ArcView’s MapGuide?. In addition to this, a unique security system was developed with ASP languages such as JavaScript by an in-house team. InfoTech Enterprises Europe was able to deliver a combination of these services in order to provide the exact solution Betterware required. Deryck Barton, Sales Manager at Betteware said:

“The continued success of Betterware depends on, first, our ability to recruit Distributors and, second, ensure that these Distributors cover all the territory they are allocated. Project Terminus helps with both these. The Area Manager can clearly identify uncovered areas and direct more resources finding and establishing Distributors. They can now monitor the performance of established areas and ensure they are being covered efficiently and effectively. We are convinced that a rigorous and professional approach to territory management is the way forward”
