Applied Geographics, Inc. (AGI) Assists the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to Develop Shared GIS Services

BOSTON, MA - October 17, 2001- Applied Geographics, Inc. (AGI) recently completed a report that recommends a design approach for a Shared GIS Service for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The development of the Shared GIS Service concept parallels current Commonwealth efforts to establish E-Government services, including the creation of the Mass.Gov Web-portal. The Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA) and the Executive Office of Administration and Finance - Information Technology Department (EOAF- ITD) contracted with AGI for this strategic planning report.

"Rapidly evolving Web-based GIS technologies and Web service initiatives present the opportunity for states to expand their access to, and use of spatial data," said Michael Terner, AGI Executive Vice President and head of AGI's Municipal Group. "A Shared GIS Service and greater map availability add broad value to multiple E-Government initiatives". The objective of the design of the Shared GIS Service was to meet the needs of state government departments and citizens for on-line mapping and location-based services, without having a need to replicate these functions in each department or branch of government. The proposed Shared GIS Service architecture capitalizes on recent industry advancements in services oriented architecture standards, including the SOAP, WSDL and UDDI standards.
