QUALCOMM Announces Roadway Express to Purchase OmniExpress Mobile
Communications System; Nation's Largest LTL Carrier to Equip Fleet with
CDMA Data Application
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 31, 2001--QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq:
QCOM), the leader in mobile communications for the transportation industry, today announced that
Roadway Express, Inc., (Nasdaq: ROAD), the nation's largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier, will
purchase and deploy the OmniExpress(TM) mobile communications system for use in its network of
vehicles and 20 of its terminals within North America.
OmniExpress is a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)-based digital wireless fleet management
system that provides real-time, two-way communications and vehicle position reporting for improved
mobile worker productivity and operations administration. Features include two-way data
communications, store-and-forward messaging, automatic vehicle tracking using integrated Global
Positioning System (GPS), as well as data integration capabilities with routing and scheduling systems,
and business-specific office applications.
OmniExpress offers a cost-effective wireless mobile communications solution by transmitting data
over the Sprint PCS digital network, which currently serves the nation's major metropolitan areas and
communities across the country. OmniExpress also offers optional access to Sprint PCS' nationwide
wireless voice service for customers who want a fully integrated voice and data solution.
Roadway Express was instrumental in assisting QUALCOMM in the development and field-testing
of the OmniExpress system, and currently has several hundred units installed and operating across a
number of pilot terminals. After successfully validating the positive impact on their operations,
Roadway Express will now expand its use of OmniExpress to 20 of its terminals throughout the United
States and Canada in 2001.
"We've seen how QUALCOMM's OmniExpress system helps us to be more proactive and
profitable, plan more efficient routes and reduce overall fleet miles," said John Bronneck, vice president
of operations for Roadway Express, Inc. "By extending our state-of-the-art information network to the
driver, we can provide critical information at the point of pickup and delivery for our customers."
"Roadway Express is continually focused on customer information requirements, operational
excellence, return on investment and technological advancement. It is significant that they have chosen
OmniExpress," said Chris Wolfe, senior vice president and general manager, QUALCOMM Wireless
Business Solutions. "We look forward to OmniExpress becoming a critical part of the Roadway Digital
Dispatch Solution, providing real-time pickup and delivery information to customers while increasing
operating efficiencies and helping to improve driver productivity."
A leading freight transportation carrier for 70 years, Roadway serves over 900,000 customer sites
using more than 10,000 tractors and 32,000 trailers. With its commitment to customer satisfaction,
Roadway has been recognized for setting the standard in providing seamless transportation service in
the North American LTL market.
