Mark Ketteman, general manager Mark Ketteman, general manager to deliver keynote paper at Distributech 2001

Distributech 2001, San Diego Convention Center (February 5-7, 2001) -- Field mapping leader Mark Ketteman, general manager of Carlsbad, California today announces that Mark Ketteman, general manager, will deliver a keynote paper at Distributech 2001 on February 5, 2001 entitled Mobile Data - "Yes We Need It!". The paper forms part of the afternoon session devoted to the impact of new technology on distributed operations.

In his address, Ketteman concludes -
"In an age where computers in the workplace are the norm, there are still a large number of industries, particularly infrastructure-intensive organizations like utilities, telecommunications, and state or local government, where half or more of employees work outside the office with little or no access to computer applications.

Field workers make up the last great frontier of the computer revolution. They account for more than 40 million employees in the United States-perhaps as many as 200 million worldwide. These workers do their jobs essentially the same way today that they did 20 or 50 years ago.

The challenge for management in these industries is to provide the same kind of time- and money-saving information support systems for field workers as they do for their office-bound employees. It is no easy task.

While the challenge may be daunting, the solutions are now fully up to the task. The technology has matured substantially in the last 10 years. Companies have more options than ever and the capabilities of systems they can deploy today are exponentially greater than those available just a few years ago.

With the proper preparation, planning and evaluation, companies can bring their field workforce into the 21st century in grand fashion, elevating them from field laborers to knowledge workers and improving bottomline performance, reducing waste, increasing customer loyalty and improving their competitive position in their industries."
