TACTICAL, STRATEGIC AND ADMINISTRATIVE CRIME ANALYSIS TRAINING FOR CRIME ANALYSTS, COMMUNITY POLICE OFFICERS, AND MANAGERS

The Des Moines Police Department, Des Moines, Iowa is hosting an intensive Crime Analysis Applications training course June 4-8, 2001. The course will be limited to 35 students and taught by Mr. Steven Gottlieb, M.P.A. Mr. Gottlieb instructs crime analysis courses for the California Department of Justice and is the Coordinator of the Crime and Intelligence Analysis Certification Program operated by the California Department of Justice and the California State University system. He has also presented his Crime Analysis course for the Federal Bureau of Investigation at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police College in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This will be a "hands-on" applications course which takes a "learning-by-doing," practical approach to training.

Students will actually perform tasks associated with crime analysis work. Each participant will also receive a copy of Mr. Gottlieb's book, "Crime Analysis: From First Report to Final Arrest," a digest over 600 pages which explains how to design, implement, and operate a crime analysis program. It also shows how to use statistical techniques to forecast crime and predict when and where criminals are likely to strike again. Each participant will also receive a copy of Mr. Gottlieb's 150-page "Crime Analysis Study Guide and Workbook," which will be used throughout the class. Tuition is $495.00 and includes the week of instruction, the text, workbook, and a wealth of handout materials.

The course is designed for: 1. The recently employed crime analyst who has limited experience, or those who work in a crime analysis unit but have received little of the formal training necessary to develop analytical skills. 2. Law enforcement personnel, community police officers and coordinators, and management personnel who want to learn how to use crime data and information to increase their effectiveness, develop "POP" projects, and learn how to properly report crime statistics to government officials and the media. 3. Law enforcement or civilian managers who are developing a crime analysis function within their agency, or who currently supervise or may supervise crime analysis personnel.

Interested persons should contact Senior Police Officer Eric Moorman, at the Des Moines Police Department, Research and Development, 25 East 1st Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50309, (515) 237-1585, fax number (515) 237-1648, or email esmoorman@ci.des-moines.ia.us for more information. Please note that the registration cut off date is May 18, 2001. www.alphagroupcenter.com
