GIS Technology Foundation Grant Series initiated by NACo and ESRI

NACo and ESRI, a NACo member, have jointly launched an initiative to provide geographic information systems (GIS) technology, training and data to NACo member county governments throughout the country.

NACo and ESRI have developed the Technology Foundation Grant Series to help county governments develop their GIS capabilities by allowing them to initiate or expand their skills and technical knowledge base. The objective of the program is to supplement county government efforts to bridge the “technology gap.”

The Technology Foundation Grant Series offers GIS software components, data and training valued at $2.5 million, to be awarded by NACo to county governments that desire to develop or further GIS technology infrastructure.

Grants will be awarded to both new and advanced users through an introductory and an intermediate grant package.

Those counties with little to no existing GIS experience that wish to develop a basic technology infrastructure and an introductory level of proficiency can apply for an introductory package. Up to 200 introductory packages will be awarded to counties whose departments or agencies are willing to initiate GIS technology.

Those counties with some proficiency using GIS technology can apply for an intermediate package. The intermediate grant is designed for counties with demonstrated experience using GIS technology that need to further its use in other agencies or departments. Intermediate packages will be awarded a maximum of 100 county governments to augment existing GIS technology.

Counties participating in the Technology Foundation Grant Series will be asked to contribute information documenting their experiences implementing or using the technology. NACo, with the help of ESRI, intends to produce a Best Practice Guide documenting the methods and procedures used by the grant recipients, thus forming a peer exchange network.

For additional information or to explore the possibility of applying for the Technology Foundation Grant Series, contact either Andrew Goldschmidt, NACo’s membership marketing director by telephone: (202) 393-NACO (6226), e-mail: agoldsch@naco.org or NACo’s Betty Thomas, project coordinator, by telephone: (202) 393-NACO, e-mail: bthomas@naco.org. You may also visit the ESRI booth during the NACo Legislative Conference March 2-6, in Washington, D.C.
