HJW Wins Contract to Map “The Rock”

Oakland, CA, July 2, 2001 - HJW GeoSpatial (HJW), Inc., a premier provider of aerial photography, digital mapping and remote sensing data, has been selected to create a photogrammetric map of the infamous Alcatraz Island. The project was contracted by Architectural Resources Group (ARG), a leading historic preservation and planning architectural firm based in San Francisco, CA.

Andy Carpentier, ARG project architect, explained that his clients are currently involved in a number of stabilization and restoration projects on Alcatraz Island. “The accuracy of the map that HJW is creating for us will allow our clients to better understand the implications of current and future projects as they relate to the existing infrastructure,” he added.

Scheduled for completion in mid July, the project will involve ground control, aerial photography, planimetric and topographic mapping to create a 40-scale digital map with 2’ contours.

“HJW mapped the Golden Gate Bridge and the Hearst Castle a few years ago. We even mapped a disintegrating Grecian sculpture for a museum’s restoration team,” said Peter Ashley, HJW senior project manager. “It’s rewarding to use photogrammetry for the preservation of historical treasures.”

Serving municipal, government- and private-sector clients since 1949, HJW’s custom professional services include aerial photography, photogrammetry, digital orthophotography, topographic and planimetric mapping, remote sensing and GIS. The firm also provides forestry services and operates Pacific Aerial Surveys, its photo library that makes more than 500,000 historic and current images available to the public. HJW has four offices in California - Oakland, Irvine, Walnut Creek, Santa Rosa and a facility in Phoenix, Arizona.
