Census Bureau Selects SRC For Technology To Distribute Census2000 Data

Company’s Compression Technology Enables Bureau to Make Data More Accessible, Productive

ORANGE, Calif., July 2, 2001 - The US Bureau of the Census has tapped SRC, LLC, of Orange, Calif., to provide advanced data compression technology and software to facilitate publication and distribution of Census2000 summary files on CD-ROM and DVD over the next three years. With SRC’s technology, the bureau achieves its primary goal: to effectively manage a data set seven times larger than the 1990 census while increasing accessibility for more users.

“Our objective was to make the data more functional and more cost-effective,” said Dean Stoecker, president, SRC. “Past census releases required both government agencies and private companies to increase their staff to manage and process the data, but our technology eliminates the need for additional personnel.”

The award of task statement ITS-102 marks the first time the bureau has chosen a commercially available geodemographic software application for distribution of census data. In addition, data will be available on the block level, which has increased the volume of statistics by more than seven times 1990 census levels.

“We’re dealing with a huge volume of very valuable, highly anticipated data,” said Stoecker. “Like the bureau, we sought not just to deliver the information, but to make it practical and almost instantly productive.”

The bureau will rely on a customized version of the SRC’s Allocate? data engine to make millions of statistics quickly and easily accessible. Allocate compresses, stores, manages, retrieves and displays geographically organized statistics. As the data engine for the Census2000 information, it will enable users to create custom geographic groups, produce tables and spreadsheets, and run custom analyses - all within minutes and from the desktop. In addition, SRC’s compression technology will streamline the data distribution process by significantly reducing the number of disks required. “Using 1990 technology, distributing block-level data would have needed 900 disks per recipient,” said Stoecker. “With Allocate, we’ve compressed the information into just a few disks or a single CD.”

SRC is also providing Census2000 data free of charge at www.FreeDemographics.com or on CD from www.extendthereach.com.
