Next Generation of ESRI’s ArcSDE DBMS Gateway Adds Support for IBM’s DB2 Spatial Extender

Redlands, California-ESRI announces the release of ArcSDE 8.1 for DB2, which extends support to IBM’s DB2 Universal Database and DB2 Spatial Extender. The release of ArcSDE 8.1 for DB2 continues ESRI's support of major commercial database management systems (DBMS) by exploiting and extending the standards-based spatial data storage and functions in DB2 and providing the gateway to the ESRI ArcGIS tools. Together, ESRI and IBM are delivering spatial information management for business intelligence and data mining solutions.

“We developed ArcSDE and our entire ArcGIS family of software to be open and standards based,” says Jack Dangermond, president, ESRI. “ESRI’s ArcSDE for DB2 provides a flexible solution to DB2 users who want to store and manage a multiuser geodatabase within their relational database management environment. ArcSDE for DB2 is the next evolution in ESRI’s commitment to bringing GIS data to more users through open technology.”

“Working with companies like ESRI to provide comprehensive solutions for IBM DB2 software is part of our commitment to deliver leading-edge e-business integration solutions,” says Jim Kelly, vice president, Data Management Software, IBM. “Leveraging IBM technology, ESRI’s ArcSDE 8.1 for DB2 will provide customers enabled core business applications like customer relationship management, supply chain management/logistics, and enterprise resource management with GIS support integrated at the database level. This integration simplifies implementations of GIS functionality within today’s data-rich enterprise environments.”

ArcSDE is the geographic information system (GIS) gateway that facilitates managing spatial data in a database management system, as well as being able to serve ESRI’s file-based data with ArcSDE for Coverages. ArcSDE serves spatial data to the ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo) and through ArcIMS as well as other applications. It is the key component in managing a multiuser spatial database and provides the infrastructure required to manage multiple users editing the same spatial database with long transactions, alternate versions, and history.

In addition, the combination of ESRI’s ArcGIS family of software and IBM’s DB2 Spatial Extender and DB2 Universal Database can provide a complete solution for distributing maps and spatial data across the Internet and for Internet and wireless location services. Moreover, this combination brings location and spatial analysis to core enterprise decision support tools like customer relational management, supply chain management, and logistics.

In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than 90 countries, and more than 1,200 business partners. ESRI’s goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them.
