Introducing MapPoint-L... discussion group for MapPoint users
Register for the MapPoint-L and you'll be eligible to win one of several copies of MapPoint 2002! Submit a MapPoint "
tech-tip" and you'll have even more chances to win
The GeoCommunity is pleased to announce MapPoint-L - an email-based discussion list and resource base
for users of Microsoft's MapPoint desktop mapping products. Based on feedback received from
visitors of the GeoCommunity website, it has been determined that the user base and resulting need for
such a collaboration tool currently exists. Given that a large number of users of MapPoint frequently visit
the GeoComm website for news, education material, and GIS/LBS related resources and the exsiting infrastructure
for email based discussion groups currently in place at the GeoCommunity, the implementation and development of the
list was fairly quick and painless.
List members are encouraged to join the mappoint-L in order to get in touch with, and collaborate with
other individuals using MapPoint. As is the case with other popular lists hosted by The GeoCommunity, such as "The GISList",
members are encouraged to use the list to:
share ideas
ask MapPoint related technical questions
offer up tips, solutions, and pointers to MapPoint resources
discuss general MapPoint related topics of interest
To subscribe to MapPoint-L simply send a blank email message to:
mappoint-l-subscribe@geocomm.com
Once on the list subscribers are encouraged to send a brief introductory message to the list - providing
a brief background history and expectations of the list always proves to be very helpful to others and usually
kicks off some interesting discussions to help bring the list to life.
The list discussion threads will be
archived online in the discussion list section of the GeoCommunity website.
The list will be hosted and maintained by The GeoCommunity and monitored by Glenn Letham, Managing Editor, The GeoCommunity.
Don't expect a heavily monitored list. According to Glenn... "I always enjoy seeing a list and community develop.
I've been involved with the GeoCommunity as a founder and I brought the popular GISList (general GIS discussion list)
to life - see http://www.geoplace.com/gw/2001/0201/0201gnln.asp.
I find what works best in developing this kind of a community is to take a hands-off approach and let the
community be in charge of its own destiny - The success of any list is in the hands of the community."
Several attempts have been made in the past to lauch MapPoint centric web portals, however, to date, the MapPoint
community and user base has not embraced these resources.
MapPoint 2002 was officially released to the public on May 31, 2001. MP 2002 retails for
$198.99, coming bundled with data that is easily worth 10x that price! It can be purchased online at
Amazon
