Tombstone, Arizona tourist attraction depicts famous gunfight at O.K. Corral
Pelham, NY-On October 26, 1881, Tombstone, Arizona police chief Virgil Earp, along
with his two deputized brothers Wyatt and Morgan and their friend Doc Holliday,
sauntered in to the O.K. Corral to disarm five cowboys. Less than a minute later, three
men lay dead, and two wounded. So went this famous but brief encounter at the location
that is now Tombstone’s most popular tourist attraction. And how does Tombstone depict
the battle, which has come to represent the wildness of the Old West? With a map created
a year after the incident by cartographer D.A. Sanborn of The Sanborn Map Company, a
business he started in 1866, fifteen years before the famous gunfight.
Dennis Santopietro, a regional manager with Sanborn, spotted the map hanging in the
office of the O.K. Corral while playing tourist in between business appointments. “It
made me proud,” said Santopietro, “to see our product displayed on the wall of a historic
site. It’s great to see that the maps D.A. made so long ago are still in use.”
Today, over a century later, the company has "linked technology with tradition" by
expanding their traditional mapping products to include geographic information systems
(GIS) consulting and services, photogrammetric mapping, and more.
Remarked Bob Williams, vice president of Sanborn, “We were producing detailed,
quality maps in 1866 and we still are today, 130 years later. And although we now have
the benefit of modern technologies like LIDAR and Airborne GPS to help us, D.A.’s
attention to detail and diligence in map making are still in evidence in the services we
provide today. I think he would be proud to see how far his company has come.”
Based in Pelham, New York, Sanborn offers photogrammetric mapping, data conversion
and comprehensive GIS services to engineering companies, government entities, utilities
and the telecommunications industry.
The Sanborn Map Company is part of the DMG Information group of companies. DMG
