MapShots announces the public beta release of TerraFetch

Cumming, GA, February 26, 2001 (SpatialNews.com NewsWire)-- MapShots announces the public beta release of TerraFetch, a software tool designed to automatically retrieve images from the Microsoft TerraServer® Web site. The Microsoft TerraServer Web site is one of the world's largest online databases, providing free public access to an on-line database of high resolution U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) aerial imagery (DOQs) and scanned USGS topographical maps (DRGs).

Using the MapShots TerraFetch application, users can enter the map coordinates for the area they are interested in, and TerraFetch will automatically retrieve the required number of images, including the ESRI World Files for geo-referencing. TerraFetch operates in a stand-alone environment or as an embedded application within an existing MapShots desktop application.

TerraFetch utilizes Microsoft's implementation of SOAP to retrieve this data from the Microsoft Terraserver Web site. SOAP is a platform independent method of accessing web-based services seamlessly from within desktop applications. Ted Macy, President of MapShots, says "MapShots has used an underlying data model based upon the concepts behind SOAP since its inception. However, this is the first instance where a MapShots desktop application is seamlessly integrated into a published third-party service utilizing the full SOAP architecture."

Well-pleased with the performance of the TerraFetch application, Ted Macy said, "In the future, MapShots applications will use SOAP technology to integrate with chemical label databases, grain marketing exchanges, data warehouses, and university knowledgebase's."

A beta version of TerraFetch is being made available for download on the MapShots Web site.

MapShots was formed in 1999. Their primary business is the development of spatial extensions for non-spatial agricultural software. Some of their customers include Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Deere & Company, 1st Ag, and Ag Connections, Inc. -- http://www.mapshots.com
