Caliper Delivers Maptitude for the Web

url(s): http://www.caliper.com
NEWTON, MA; March 28, 2001 - Caliper Corporation has released Maptitude for the Web(tm). This significant new mapping software product makes it easy to design, publish, and manage interactive Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications and location-based services for the World Wide Web.

A single integrated product, Maptitude for the Web combines the features of a geographic information system and of a web application server. Maptitude for the Web has all of the visual tools, wizards, and geographic data that are needed to create compelling and attractive maps, plus special capabilities for designing and running interactive map applications.

Maptitude for the Web is designed to meet the needs of many types of users. Data can be mapped and visualized for nearly any existing database. Map designers can use Maptitude for the Web to create interactive maps and control their display settings. Web site designers can incorporate Maptitude for the Web page elements into their own web pages. Developers can add properties and functions to any web application or web application template created with Maptitude for the Web.

Maptitude for the Web includes an extensible set of web application templates called Mapplications(r). Mapplications are Active Server Page scripts that run on the web server to produce either HTML or XML output with embedded map images. Each Mapplication is tailored to a specific task, such as displaying a thematic map or finding the nearest map features to a specific location.

While Maptitude for the Web is responsible for all of the geographic computations, the application script controls the actual output format sent to the browser. By editing the script, developers can use Maptitude for the Web to target location-based application to different display devices (e.g., desktop browsers, wireless phones, and hand-held devices).

Maptitude for the Web breaks the price barrier for web-based mapping. A development license is $995 and a publication license is only $2995. Less capable map servers cost many times more than Maptitude for the Web.

Web standards and protocols change rapidly, and Maptitude for the Web will not be locked into a specific output format. Caliper will regularly add new Mapplications and update the existing ones to support new browser and server capabilities. Licensed users will be able to download them instantly from the Maptitude for the Web desktop.

Maptitude for the Web is being used to deploy a wide range of web mapping applications. These include:

  • Redistricting web sites for various state legislatures, including Colorado, Maryland, and Wyoming (e.g., http://www.caliper.com/redist/colorado)
  • Small Business Administration: HUBZone Empowerment Contracting Program (https://eweb1.sba.gov/hubzone/internet/application/dsp_apps_home.cfm)
  • Election 2000 Results (http://riesling.caliper.com/maptitude/2000election)
  • Nationwide 107th Congressional District Finder (http://riesling.caliper.com/Maptitude/testcong)
  • Bridgewater State College GeoGraphics Lab: Cape Cod Advanced Travel Planner (http://www.e-transit.org/cape_cod/)
  • Mass Stats: demographic information about Massachusetts (http://www.mastats.com)

More information about features and pricing, as well as more examples of web applications, can be found on the Caliper web site (http://www.caliper.com/webmaptitude.htm)
