Navigation Technologies debuts first real-time digital map evaluation program for wireless service providers -- Service providers to have real-time data access enabling greater consumer data personalization

Apr 30, 2001 -- Navigation Technologies today announced the availability of its real-time digital map service evaluation program. Already recognized as the premier supplier of navigable map data, the move to real-time map information reinforces Navigation Technologies` commitment to advancing the delivery of NAVTECH data.

As the landscape for digital map data and the location-based services they enable has evolved, Navigation Technologies recognized the need to pioneer a more advanced delivery method. This new approach enables service providers for areas such as telecommunications, telematics and web portals to rapidly address location-sensitive consumer requirements without the significant investment required to build and maintain a map data management system in-house. The new delivery model also makes getting map information much easier. It aims to allow a service provider simply to send a data request to Navigation Technologies` server and have the answer back within seconds.

The evaluation program, in particular, heralds Navigation Technologies` readiness to allow customers to work with NAVTECH data on a connected basis.

"The evaluation program enables service providers to access a production-grade mapping application as they refine their location-based services," said Claude Martane, General Manager Europe for Consumer Applications for Navigation Technologies. "We`re offering service providers a look under the hood and an opportunity to assess the performance, availability and security of our new real-time map service."

The evaluation program provides access to a wide range of features including map display, geocoding, location address identification, points of interest searching, route calculation and route directions. Participating in the evaluation program will help customers and Navigation Technologies formulate commercial launch plans for location-based offerings and is another milestone in Navigation Technologies` vision for advanced delivery of the most accurate digital maps in the world.

Real-time access to Navigation Technologies` map service allows service providers to improve their relationship with consumers by ensuring that the information sent to them is geographically relevant. The real-time map service also gives service providers full control over the user experience, which translates to substantial flexibility in how map and location-related information responses can be used. This will be increasingly important as the market moves towards the personalization of information and product offerings.

"Service providers have escalating demands from consumers for access to more and more data," said Larry Dunn, Vice President of Connected Map Service, for Navigation Technologies. "Accessing NAVTECH data on a real-time basis allows them to incorporate the most current digital map information available into their applications, without the overhead of owning and managing a complex map management system."

Navigation Technologies Corp. is the world`s leading provider of digital map information and enabling technology used in a wide range of smart navigation products, including automotive navigation systems, GIS and fleet applications, hand held products, Internet mapping, PC-based applications and call centre-based navigation services.

The Company`s NAVTECH brand digital maps, covering North America and Western Europe, are the route guidance solution chosen by leading automotive, electronic, and software manufacturers for their unrivalled accuracy, depth, and reliability.
