Larimer County Contracts CompassCom to Maintain Maps

ENGLEWOOD, COLO., 30 April 2001 - The Larimer Emergency Telephone Authority (LETA) has
contracted CompassCom Inc. of Englewood, Colo., to provide quarterly maintenance of its
digital mapping system.
This digital map database is the same one CompassCom developed last year for Larimer County,
Colo., to enable its E911 dispatchers to pinpoint the locations of emergency calls from
cellular telephones. At the time, Larimer County was among the first in the country to realize
its existing maps were incapable of locating the latitude/longitude coordinates that soon will
come from cell phones in compliance with FCC E911 Phase II regulations.
"LETA understands that accurate, up-to-date E911 maps save lives," said CompassCom President
Brant Howard. "Other counties are just now realizing that their maps must be improved and
constantly updated to handle the demands of wireless emergency calls."
As part of the new contract, CompassCom has devised a written plan to keep LETA's highly
accurate street centerline maps up to date. First, CompassCom is establishing a web site on
behalf of LETA where its mapping partners can submit updates and changes to the current map
database. Many local cities and towns participate in the LETA map project and have access to
its maps.
LETA is unique in its approach to map development. To defray costs, it developed a digital
basemap that could be used for diverse applications by many local departments and agencies in
addition to E911. However, the large number of participants makes it difficult to keep track
of inputs on map changes in the rapidly growing county, necessitating the maintenance
contract.
"It was difficult, but worthwhile, to consolidate the mapping efforts of so many city and
county agencies," said Mary Moore, Communications Manager in Fort Collins, Colo. "Now that
we've made this big investment in time and money to create the map database, we want to
protect it with routine maintenance."
In addition to assembling map updates from participants, CompassCom will periodically obtain
and review other sources of geographic information, especially filings of new subdivision
plats and address ranges from local planning departments, to keep pace with construction and
development across the county.
CompassCom was established in 1994 as a product and service provider for Global Positioning
System (GPS), Geographic Information System (GIS), and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL)
markets. CompassCom offers complete GPS and GIS solutions as a business partner with Trimble
Navigation, ESRI Inc., AT&T Wireless, and Sierra Wireless.
