TROY, N.Y., May 1, 2001-- Enables Users to Combine Data in New Ways to Create Feature-Rich Maps; Windows(R) 2000 Certification Reinforces Company's Commitment to Anticipating Customer Demand

MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq: MAPS) today announced the release of MapInfo Professional(R) v6.5, the newest version of the company's flagship product. MapInfo Professional v6.5 boasts significant new features, dramatic visual enhancements and Windows(R) 2000 certification, which all lead to stronger customer analysis and easier enterprise deployment. MapInfo Professional is used by companies in virtually every industry to analyze business patterns and trends to make better informed business decisions and develop ideal customer relationship management practices. The increased analytical power in MapInfo Professional v6.5 makes it ideal for telecommunications applications, customer relationship management and emergency management practices.

"The new features in MapInfo Professional v6.5 are customer-driven. Due to the vast diversity of MapInfo's user base, we spend a significant amount of time speaking with our customers to determine how they want MapInfo Professional to perform and what functions are most useful to them," said Andrew Dressel, founder and MapInfo Professional product line director at MapInfo. "The Windows 2000 certification is further testament that we offer our customers products that perform optimally in the latest operating environments."

"Responding to customer input, MapInfo has increased functionality and added several interesting features in MapInfo Professional v6.5," said David Sonnen, senior consultant for Spatial Information Management at IDC. "With improved database connectivity, object processing and new visual capabilities, MapInfo Professional v6.5, with its Windows 2000 certification, is a solid tool for businesses that need to manage and analyze geographic, demographic and customer data."

With the new visual enhancements of MapInfo Professional v6.5, customers are able to display several different variables on one map. For example, a wireless service provider can now show cell phone usage data, tower locations and zip codes on one city map, enabling up-to-date demographic analysis for improved engineering, marketing, competitive analysis and customer service.

"The new features in MapInfo Professional v6.5 will enable us to better serve our cellular customers," said James Copeland, a senior RF (Radio Frequency) engineer and MapInfo Professional power user for 16 years at a large worldwide cellular equipment vendor. "We will now be able to provide much more than a basic map of the coverage area. The new automatic zoom layering of grid data with raster tables allows us to display the topographic cellular coverage area in real-time for more in-depth analysis, which will ultimately help our wireless customers to improve their own service strategies."

Additionally, companies are able to perform enhanced market analysis and create powerful visual presentations. For example, when displaying election results, electoral votes and popular votes can be represented simultaneously on the same map. Government agencies also use MapInfo Professional for parcel and tax management, asset management, storm water and pollution management and transportation.

"We use MapInfo Professional to aid us in determining which properties are in or near a flood zone," said Erica Reed, GIS tech and QA for Internal Programs at American Flood. "The new features in MapInfo Professional v6.5, especially the added translator and the transparent layer option, are ideal for displaying flood zones, FEMA flood panels, streets and properties on one comprehensive map."

"MapInfo Professional v6.5 shows MapInfo's commitment to staying up to date with new technology. The new prism maps and raster translucency functions open doors for users to create even more outstanding illustrations of their data," said Angela Whitener, vice president, software development of IntelleVue. "For example, the raster translucency feature allows users to stack two raster images on top of each other for analysis. We can display a `hot spot' contour map of hazards on top of an aerial photograph in order to clearly show roof tops and buildings in relationship to the hazards."

New Features in MapInfo Professional v6.5

--Prism Maps--This dramatic new visual effect allows users to show more than one variable of data at the same time, on the same map, for improved market analysis and presentation.

--Raster Image Translucency--Users can now control the amount to which other map layers show through raster images, to combine with other raster and vector data in ways not possible before.

--Database Connectivity--Data access has been enhanced to support the latest version of Oracle Spatial(R) 8.1.7 and MapInfo(R) SpatialWare(R) v4.5.

--Improved Object Processing and New Object Types--In addition to detecting self-intersections and gaps, MapInfo Professional v6.5 can also detect overlaps and automatically correct any of these problems, ensuring accurate analysis. This upgrade also supports two new object types, multi-point and collection, providing more support for Oracle Spatial object types and compliance with Open GIS Consortium simple object types.

--New TIN-based Interpolator--With the Triangulated-Irregular-Network based interpolator, users can now create more accurate maps for phenomena such as terrain with more definition and depth.

--New Projections, Usability Enhancements and Tool Enhancements--These enhancements add convenience and improve the overall customer experience.

Pricing and Availability

MapInfo Professional v6.5 will be available on June 1 at a list price of $1,495. MapInfo Professional will be available on Windows 2000, 98, 95 and Windows NT 4.0.
