SPOT Image Donates Imagery for Education

RESTON, VA – SPOT Image Corporation today announced the donation of an entire statewide image map of California for an innovative educational program – GeoCyberCampÔ, “The Earth-First Computer Camp for Kids.” GeoCyberCamp™ is a new initiative developed by Geo InSight International Inc., a leading GIS firm based in Carpinteria, California.

GeoCyberCamp is a geography education program that combines space-age technology with real-world interaction, observation, and environmental awareness. The statewide image map donated by SPOT Image to Geo InSight had originally been licensed to all state and local government agencies and state educational institutions. Through Geo InSight’s Educational Program, it is now also available for home-school, after-school, and summer camp programs throughout California and other locations to be serviced by Geo InSight’s learning centers and virtual learning centers.

“Both our companies believe in educating children and in developing future user communities through teaching the application of technology,” explains Gene Colabatistto, President of SPOT Image Corporation. “By working with the right commercial companies, educational institutions and the companies themselves can jointly benefit from a synergistic relationship.”

“With the SPOT image donation, we will be able to help children understand geography and environmental science through the use of satellite technology,” said Victoria Bobo, Education Program Coordinator for Geo InSight. “We are extremely excited to have such a wealth of information donated to our educational programs.”

Marge Elliott, President of Geo InSight International, Inc. elaborated on the educational programs, “Our goal is to help students achieve greater insight about Earth and develop an understanding of environmental stewardship through hands-on training in computer technologies, environmental science, and social sciences. We have been very fortunate to work with cutting edge technologies for many years and want to share these technologies with future generations. We appreciate this generous donation from SPOT and feel that all our program participants will benefit from this wonderful opportunity to examine our earth from space.”

The California statewide image map is part of the SPOT USA Select product line (http://www.spot.com/HOME/NEWS/spotusaselect.htm) that provides statewide and nationwide image maps on a commercial basis. SPOT Image is very interested in supporting educational programs at all levels with these valuable databases. For more information on this program, contact education@spot.com.
