REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., May 30, 2001 - Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL) today
announced the industry's most advanced solution for wireless location-based services in a market that is estimated to exceed $20 billion by 2006, according to
industry analyst firm Ovum. Oracle also unveiled more than 20 location-specific partnerships with industry-leading companies worldwide in areas such as mobile
positioning, mapping, routing, geocoding, and yellow pages content. Now companies can take advantage of location technology today to deliver a new class of
wireless services through targeted, location-aware applications with information such as maps, directions, traffic reports and positioning. Oracle's advanced location
technology leverages the powerful combination of Oracle9i Application Server (Oracle9iAS) Wireless Edition and Oracle9i Database with Oracle(R) Spatial.
Location-Based Services - A Key Component of Mobile Applications
By leveraging location-based services, companies can greatly enhance their mobile applications. Location-based services not only reduce the number of inputs and
lower the time required to obtain information, but they also derive improved efficiencies, enabling access to information that is immediately relevant to users, such as
maps, driving directions, traffic reports or nearby businesses and services.
Partners Flock to Work with Oracle's Wireless Location-Based Services Technology
Oracle is joining with more than 20 industry-leading companies worldwide to provide a complete solution to network operators and companies looking to deliver
location-based services to their employees, customers, and partners. The following partners are members of Oracle's Mobile Partner Initiative, a part of the Oracle
Partner Program, (see separate release today) and are working to integrate their technology and content with Oracle9iAS Wireless Edition and the Oracle Spatial
capabilities in Oracle9i Database: AirFlash, Inc.; APAS; CellPoint; e-Spatial Solutions; ESRI; Geodan Mobile Solutions; IntelliWhere; Ionic; Kivera; MapInfo;
Navigation Technologies; opt[e]way; Profilium; SCC; SignalSoft; Telcontar; TransDecisions; Trueposition; Vicinity Corporation; Webraska; Where2net; WhereOnEarth
and Xmarc Inc.
"Oracle9iAS Wireless Edition and Oracle Spatial are a winning combination when it comes to enabling wireless and location-based services," said Euro Beinat,
CEO of Geodan Mobile Solutions. "After serious reviews of competing offers, Geodan rapidly concluded that only Oracle had a seamlessly integrated platform to
deploy a personalized wireless portal that would not only let us rapidly wireless-enable existing and new back-end information, but also let us provide out-of-the box
support for next generation location-based services. Our first location-based services implementation was for the Dutch Police and we look forward to working closely
with Oracle to deliver location-based solutions to other companies."
"There has been a lot of hype around future location technologies such as E-911 and GPS, but Oracle provides a solution that enables network operators and
companies to roll-out advanced location-aware applications today," said Denise Lahey, CEO of OracleMobile, the mobile products and services division of Oracle
Corp. "With the combined capabilities of our partners' technologies with Oracle9iAS Wireless Edition and the Oracle Spatial capabilities of Oracle9i Database, we are
able deliver the most complete location-based services solution available."
About Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition
Oracle9iApplication Server Wireless Edition is the only complete middleware for developing and deploying wireless applications. Oracle9iAS Wireless Edition offers
personalization, location, messaging and content management features that together form a powerful infrastructure for delivering any type of content and application to
any device.
About Oracle9i's Spatial Capabilities
Oracle9i Database with Oracle Spatial serves as a foundation for deploying enterprise-wide spatial information systems and wireless location-based services. It
provides data management for location information such as road networks, wireless service boundaries, and geocoded customer addresses. It enhances
Oracle-based applications by allowing users to easily incorporate location information directly in their applications and services. Oracle Spatial can also perform
location queries on geocoded yellow page databases, to find the nearest hotels, restaurants, and gas stations. In short, Oracle Spatial enables e-business
applications, portals and wireless ASPs to readily incorporate location capability into their services.
