Preparations in Full Swing for ESRI's 2nd Annual Education User Conference Conference to Highlight NPS Re-Creation of Lewis & Clark Expedition

Redlands, California-ESRI is pleased to announce that preparations for its second annual Education User Conference (EdUC) are well under way. The EdUC is scheduled for July 5-7, 2002, in San Diego, California, immediately before the ESRI International User Conference, July 8-12, 2002.

Last year, more than 400 elementary, secondary, and university educators, as well as administrators, librarians, and museum professionals, shared their experiences using geographic information system (GIS) technology. Even more attendees are expected to participate in the 2002 conference, which includes presentations, panel discussions, and hands-on workshops. Attendance is restricted to registered users of ESRI's GIS software products. "The first EdUC was dynamite!" said Charlie Fitzpatrick of ESRI's Schools and Libraries Program. "People said, 'There's so much great stuff going on that we can't decide! We want to see it all!' Over and over, I heard 'That was great! I'm going to do it at my school next year!' The only thing harder than getting people to conclude their foyer discussions during breaks was clearing the rooms at the end of a session. The hands-on labs were very popular, and repeat sessions allowed everyone to try out new tools between attending some of the more than 100 user presentations."

Dr. Michael Goodchild of the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis is scheduled to present the keynote address.

Mr. Gerard Baker, superintendent of the National Park Service (NPS) Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery II project, will provide the closing address. The Corps of Discovery II will trace the steps of the original expedition, beginning in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2003, exactly 200 years after Lewis & Clark's epic journey.

Those who are considering presenting a paper at next year's conference should be aware that the deadline to submit an abstract is November 16, 2001. Additional information is available on the Web at http://www.esri.com/educ. Questions may be e-mailed to educ2002@esri.com.

For more than 30 years, ESRI has been the leading developer of GIS software with more than 300,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than 90 countries, and more than 1,200 business partners. ESRI's goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them.
