U.S. Military Seeks ``Information Dominance'' Through PDA Deployment; Enterprises Again Reap Benefits of Government Technology Adoption

NORWALK, Conn., Oct. 31, 2001--The U.S. military calls it "Information Dominance."

What they're referring to is taking advantage of PDAs and handheld devices to improve communication and speed the transfer of information from the base to the field.

Originally deployed in the military as a means to expedite the tracking of equipment and food supplies, PDA technology now goes so far as to help U.S. soldiers track enemy and friendly troop movement. GPS modules mounted on strengthened PDAs made by Symbol Technologies make this possible.

History shows that U.S. military and government adoption of emerging technologies spells great opportunities for the enterprise-user.

"We've seen this time and again. Technologies emerge, are embraced and developed by the military and government, and businesses gain from the result," said Rich Tehrani, president of Technology Marketing Corp.(TM) and publisher of its Planet PDA(TM) magazine. "In fact, the Internet itself developed in large part because of the government's need for a pervasive, indestructible communications network during the Cold War. It also happened with NASA's cultivation of the microprocessor, leading to the development of the PC. The PDA and handheld computing technology are developing now before our eyes and will be just as boundless."

TMC Vice President Marc Robins thinks any business can reap the benefits of PDA deployment: "The U.S. military's 'Information Dominance' application is just one example of how the PDA is dramatically improving communications. Businesses worldwide are realizing that a PDA-equipped workforce -- with anytime, anywhere access to corporate data -- is more efficient and more productive."

Enterprise application of PDA and handheld computing technologies is the focus of Planet PDA(TM): The Global Summit on Handheld Productivity Solutions, a new conference taking place Dec. 4-6, 2001, at The Venetian in Las Vegas. Technology Marketing Corp. (TMC(TM)) hosts the event.

"It is crucial that businesses do their research and develop a handheld computing strategy that works best for them and addresses their unique challenges -- similar to what the military has done. Planet PDA(TM) features a conference program that allows them to learn about the applications available right now -- and determine the most effective way to deploy them in their organization," added Tehrani, when asked why a business or IT manager would attend this new event.
