At the 2001 ESRI Users Conference, Leica Geosystems showcased its family of
laser rangefinding products for the GIS market.
The products include the Laser Locator for long-range applications, and the
handheld DISTO pro4 for shorter-range measurements. They are both designed
to interface directly with Leica's GS50 GPS/GIS data acquisition system via
an RS232 serial data connection.
"The laser rangefinders make it possible to record geospatial data for
locations that cannot easily be occupied by the data collector, such as
rooftop antennas. It's also ideal for taking height measurements of
buildings, utility poles, trees and other objects," said Stig Pedersen,
GPS/GIS business director.
The Laser Locator is a unique instrument designed for long-range distance
measurements from 10 to 4,000 meters. The high-precision 7x42 binoculars
with built-in laser rangefinder, digital compass and inclinometer permits
the collection of data such as distances, heights and elevation angles
remotely.
The DISTO pro4 is a lightweight handheld laser meter that measures
distances, areas and volumes, as well as remote Pythagorean calculations.
The unit includes a built-in alphanumeric keyboard, menu-driven multi-line
LCD display, calculator functions, memory for up to 800 values and a
multifunction end cover with adapter plate and alignment aid. The "smart"
DISTO pro4 software automatically recognizes which end cover has been fitted
and adjusts accordingly. The basic DISTO pro4 provides ±3 mm accuracy at
ranges up to 100 meters. The enhanced DISTO pro4 a model provides accuracy
of ±1.5 mm.
Leica's Terrestrial Data Acquisition business group, based in Torrance,
California, develops, manufactures and markets a full range of GIS data
collection products using the GPS satellite network. Products include the
0.5-meter GS50 system for primary data collection applications and the 1-2
meter GS5+ system for the secondary data collection market. These tools,
coupled with Leica's proprietary GIS DataPRO(tm) office software package,
offer innovative and flexible GPS/GIS data collection solutions for a wide
range of industries.
The Leica Geosystems GIS and Mapping Division, headquartered in Atlanta,
Georgia, is a leading provider of integrated end-to-end solutions for the
acquisition, processing and 3-D visualization of spatial data. The division
encompasses the operations of ERDAS, Inc., and LH Systems, which were
acquired by Leica in April 2001, along with Leica's GPS/GIS and LIS business
groups.
Leica Geosystems, with worldwide headquarters in Heerbrugg, Switzerland,
develops, manufactures and markets systems for surveying, mapping and
position determination. The company, with 2,750 employees, has a turnover
of over 600 million Swiss francs and is listed on the Swiss Exchange. It is
structured in six divisions: GIS and Mapping, Surveying and Engineering,
Industrial Measurement, Special Products, Consumer Products and New
Businesses.
