Reston, VA -- The Management Association for Private Photogrammetric
Surveyors (MAPPS) has written the FAA and Secretary of Transportation urging
that its member firms be permitted to resume flight operations.
Due to the tragic events of last Tuesday, September 11, the Federal Aviation
Administration grounded all general aviation aircraft last week. While
commercial air travel is getting back to normal, some general aviation
aircraft is still not permitted to fly. Aerial photography missions
utilizing visual flight rules (VFR) are in that category.
"MAPPS is respectful to those who lost their lives and were injured in this
tragic attack, and our sympathies go out to the victims' families. We are
also mindful of the difficult national security issues facing our government
leaders. However, aerial photography is critical to the nation's
infrastructure and environment and a prolonged delay permitting aerial photo
missions back in the air will not only impact our member firms, but America's
economy as well. In the meantime, we urge our member firms' clients to be
patient and understanding. Any firms, agencies or organizations that have
projects requiring aerial photography should contact the photogrammetric
mapping firm with whom they work to discuss scheduling," said MAPPS Executive
Director John Palatiello.
MAPPS has indicated a willingness to work with the FAA on reasonable
additional measures to enhance the safety and security of aerial photographic
missions.
MAPPS will continue to post updates on its web site (www.mapps.org). Other
sources are the FAA (www.faa.gov) and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association (www.aopa.org).
A MAPPS member firm, Keystone Aerial Surveys, Inc., has been granted special
permission to mobilize an aerial photo mission of the World Trade Center. The
firm is under contract with the State of New York. "Keystone's deployment is
yet another example of the ability of private firms to mobilize quickly for
emergency response," Palatiello said. To view photos of the World Trade
Center, go to Keystone's web site www.keystoneaerialsurveys.com
MAPPS is a national trade association of more than 150 firms engaged in
aerial photography, photogrammetric mapping and related geographic
information systems (GIS) services.
