New Vis QualityTM Application Completes the Suite of Products that Define this Packaged Offering

CYPRESS, CA (September 25, 2001) * UGS (NYSE: UGS) today announces the industry's first enterprise quality solution for manufacturers that addresses the entire quality management process from start to finish. This powerful solution improves product dimensional quality, streamlines the entire quality management process and reduces development costs. For the first time, individuals throughout the entire enterprise and supply chain can create, view and share quality information in an electronic, paperless form * right from their desktop.

The UGS enterprise quality solution includes a comprehensive family of tools and services along with a structured methodology designed to drive dimensional quality into the product development process. The tools use the industry standard, lightweight Direct Model (.JT) format and work with all leading CAD applications. The enterprise quality solution is a complete end-to-end solution that encompasses the entire product development lifecycle * from concept through product design, tooling design and build, manufacturing, prototype, production and continuous improvement.

The UGS enterprise quality solution consists of a scalable suite of applications that includes two existing UGS products, Vis VSA for dimensional analysis and Vis Publish for 3D digital publishing, along with a new offering being announced today, Vis Quality, for high-end visualization of measurement inspection data. In addition, the UGS enterprise quality solution leverages the power of UGS' industry leading visual collaboration solution, e-Vis, to enable effective quality management throughout the extended enterprise. The synergistic combination of these tools helps manufacturers improve product dimensional quality, reduce development costs, minimize production build issues, reduce warranty defects, scrap and rework, reduce the need for physical prototypes, leverage manufacturing information and streamline the entire dimensional quality process.

UGS professional services are also available for optimal deployment of the solution throughout the enterprise. UGS can perform an assessment of current enterprise quality practices and provide recommendations to improve dimensional quality processes, optimize solution deployment and maximize return on investment.

"UGS' enterprise quality solution includes a very powerful and comprehensive set of products," says Fred Smereka, President of Trikon Corporation * a leading dimensional management services provider for over 30 years. "We are very impressed with its overall capabilities and are using the solution to help customers improve the dimensional quality of their products. "It is also enabling significant productivity gains. For example, Vis VSA has allowed us to reduce dimensional analysis modeling time by over 50 percent. UGS' enterprise quality solution allows us to deliver dimensional management services in a completely electronic, paperless form * something that has never been done before."

"The enterprise quality solution underscores UGS' commitment to provide robust open solutions to the manufacturing industry," says Joan Hirsch, director of MCAD solutions, UGS. "The CAD-neutral nature of the enterprise quality solution means that virtually any company doing product development can use these tools to optimize the dimensional quality of their products."

The UGS Enterprise Quality Solution * a Suite of Quality Offerings The following is a brief description of the three UGS applications included in the solution:

* Vis Quality is a new tool used to graphically display, analyze and communicate production measurement data relative to 3D geometry in a high-end visualization environment. It can be used to troubleshoot assembly build problems and share quality information throughout the extended enterprise. Measurement inspection data that normally exists only on the factory floor can be easily accessed from any desktop.

* Vis VSA is a powerful dimensional analysis tool used to simulate manufacturing and assembly processes and predict the amounts and causes of variation. By representing variation in the digital mockup, Vis VSA enables manufacturers to evaluate product dimensional quality, before making physical parts or tooling. The result is improved product quality, reduced development cost and minimized time to market.

* Vis Publish is a revolutionary, 3D digital publishing solution, which enables individuals throughout the entire manufacturing enterprise to author, distribute and visualize the most current product and process data in a controlled, multi-media environment. This is accomplished by leveraging enterprise visualization software, reusing existing product and process data, integrating 2D and 3D environments and automating the maintenance of data. Vis Publish provides the enterprise quality solution with the ability to create and maintain critical quality documents.

Leveraging e-Vis to Enable Quality Throughout the Enterprise To connect the extended enterprise to mission-critical dimensional quality information in a secure, Internet-enabled workspace, the enterprise quality solution leverages the power of e-Vis, UGS' industry leading visual collaboration solution. By using e-Vis as an integral part of the solution, users are able to proactively monitor manufacturing and assembly processes via real-time access to manufacturing-related quality information plus instant, automated e-mail and pager notification.
