New appointment for Ordnance Survey chief
E-business move gains double boost
The agency has won two separate honours from the Office of the e-Envoy, the organisation working
to get the UK online and ensuring that the country, its citizens and its businesses make the very best
of the digital age.
Vanessa Lawrence, Ordnance Survey's Director General and Chief Executive, has been appointed
an e-Champion, one of a small group of officials chosen to drive forward the process of getting the
government and its services online.
The accolade comes just days after Ordnance Survey's e-business strategy secured a maximum
four-star award for meeting the vision that all dealings with government should be capable of online
delivery by 2005.
Ms Lawrence's appointment was announced by the minister responsible for Ordnance Survey, Sally
Keeble MP, in a speech at the Association for Geographic Information's conference in London.
Ms Keeble said the appointment reflects the importance the government places on geographic
information, and it complements Ms Lawrence's continuing role as Director General of Ordnance
Survey and as official government advisor on all survey, mapping and geographical information
matters.
The minister added that Ordnance Survey's digital mapping data is already widely used to underpin
many initiatives to improve public services. "It's only when you start looking at the many benefits
that geographic information can bring to society that it becomes clear how significant intelligent
mapping can be in improving the good governance of this country and enhancing the quality of life
for the citizen," she said. The launch of OS MasterMap - the most detailed, flexible and intelligent
mapping ever provided by Ordnance Survey and a key element of its e-business strategy - "…will
make it easier for businesses, government departments and local authorities to view their own
information, and the information of others, in a common geographic context," the minister
commented.
Vanessa Lawrence said: "I am honoured and excited to be appointed an e-Champion. It creates a
formal link between senior decision makers in government and the geographical information
industry. Both sides are heavily involved in the information economy and online services, so this is
very good news indeed."
The top four-star award is recognition that Ordnance Survey's move into e-business is likely to
bring significant benefits to customers. The strategy includes the development of online ordering
and delivery services for mapping data, and a series of improvements to the Ordnance Survey
website - www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk.
"We are delighted that our e-business strategy has been recognised as one of the best in
government," said Ordnance Survey's e-Strategy Implementation Manager, Ian Evans. "We
welcome the acknowledgement that e-business is an essential part of how we will develop products
and services in the future."
The award follows the green light status given by the e-Envoy to an initial version of the strategy in
March.
Vanessa Lawrence has also been awarded two honorary doctorates by British universities. The
University of Sheffield - where she graduated with a BA degree in 1984 - has awarded her an
honorary degree as Doctor of Science; and she has also been invested with an honorary
doctorate by Oxford Brookes University.
