Author Profile - Tom Patterson

Tom Patterson , National Park Service - I've worked for the National Park Service for 16 years as a Ranger in law enforcement, search and rescue and emergency medical services. For the past 11 years I've been the Fire Management Officer in Joshua Tree National Park and the BLM Palm Springs Field Office. About four years ago I mapped my first fire using a Trimble ScoutMaster GPS receiver and Tactical Mapping System on a Toshiba notebook that only had a Pentium 120 processor 32 megs of RAM and a 1.26 GB HDD. Before we completed flying the entire perimeter the Incident Commander had demanded the map over the radio several times because of the high values at risk (peoples homes). Just to get him off my back I tried to fax the map to him through a cell phone from the back seat of the helicopter...It worked! After that fire I got hooked on GIS and my life has been changed forever.
