Build a House
Junior builders can build a house and explore how thing work inside! Learn how to engage your youngster in our Infant, Toddler, and Preschooler activities:
Infant ActivitiesYoung babies hold blocks in their hands, and may even put them into their mouths to get more information about them. They are starting to learn about how things feel and what they do.
Older babies bang the blocks on the floor to hear the sound they make. They practice transferring objects from one hand to the other and become better at picking up and putting down. Even older babies will explore by placing blocks in their mouths.
Toddler ActivitiesAs they become mobile, young toddlers carry around armfuls of blocks and will experiment with carrying blocks of different weights and sizes. Young toddlers are more interested in knocking down towers than in building them and will delight in knocking over any pile of blocks you build for them. This seeming destructive behavior helps the toddler learn about balance.
Preschooler ActivitiesPreschool children's block play becomes more detailed and more elaborate. They often build structures that represent real buildings in their world, such as home, school, or a favorite store. Preschoolers begin making empty spaces in the middle of their structures, building walls and perhaps even a roof. Because pretending is such a very big part of their lives, they will start telling stories about their structures.
