Storyboard Design Challenge

Summer is a perfect time to go the movies! Think about how many blockbusters come out during this time of year! And with so many books that become movies, like the Harry Potter series, there are endless opportunities for your students to imagine how a story can come to life by using process and design skills.

Materials
• Blank storyboard (download free forms at www.northernirelandscreen.co.uk/doc/links/s_board_01.pdf)
• Drawing and coloring tools

Procedure
1. Have students discuss some of their favorite books or stories. Decide which story the group will work on, and pick a favorite scene.
2. Break down that scene into as many individual portions, or shots, as possible.
3. Use the storyboard blocks to visualize what that scene might look like. Have students draw each character and the scenery how the book describes it, and how they interpret it. Think about what sound or music might be in the background and how each shot transitions to the next shot.
4. Have the students present their storyboards to the class. Did everyone interpret the scene the same way?

What’s Going On?
Storyboards are just like engineering challenges. Engineers take a concept or a problem and must find a way to interpret those thoughts and communicate them into a product. The first step is often visualization. After the concept is represented properly, the product can be financed, built, marketed and sold. In movies, it ultimately comes down to the director’s interpretation of a story. If this summer, you are left wondering why the new Harry Potter movie was not like how you would have interpreted the scene, maybe the storyboard was different than the one in your mind!
