Snowball Meltdown Winter is a great time for studying the weather, and snow is a perfect material for science inquiry!
You Need:
Snow! Bins, buckets, trays, or any item that can contain melting snow Graph paper Clocks or the time-measurement devices of your choice
Do This!
- Have your students make a series of snowballs of all shapes and sizes, some packed tightly and some loosely.
- Observe the snowballs and make predictions about how fast they will melt. Will more packed melt faster than loosely packed? How does the size of the snowball matter?
- As a class, decide upon which size and level of packing you want to explore further.
- Make 20 – 30 snowballs of this type and place them at different spots of your classroom or outside. Each spot should have different variables contributing to its melt, such as exposure to sun, proximity to heat source, etc. Make sure to place a couple of snowballs in a neutral spot (not close to heat or cold, not in direct wind, etc.) to use as your control group.
- Make predictions about how the snowballs will melt.
- Record the time it takes each snowball to melt.
- Graph the results and see if your predictions were correct. What contributed to the differences you saw? Which variables were more important?
What's Going On? Snowflakes form above us in the clouds. Water vapor condenses around a nucleus of dust. The water droplet grows in size, cools and forms a crystal. The crystal continues to attract condensing water vapor and then falls. As the crystals fall out of the clouds into warmer air, they bunch up into snow. Newly-formed snow reflects more than 90% of the sunlight that hits it. The sun cannot actually melt clean snow all on its own. Usually, warm air performs most of the melting. Further Exploration Try mixing some dirt particles into the snow while still outside. Do these snowballs melt any slower or faster than the clean snow?
