What is Videoconferencing?

Science delivered at the speed of light
Videoconferencing connects your students with scientists, doctors, and experts in their fields with a LIVE interactive two-way experience with your school or from COSI.
Videoconference from COSI

With COSI’s Videoconferencing programs, you can:

  • Give your students a surgeon’s-eye view of a live knee replacement procedure
  • Take your class into the morgue at the Ohio State University Medical Center for an actual autopsy with a forensic pathologist
  • Discuss cutting-edge research with professionals in science, math, engineering, and other exciting fields
  • Learn videoconference etiquette and be professional during a program

If your school does not have videoconferencing technology, bring your class to COSI and participate in most programs from our Galaxy Theater.

What equipment do I need for a videoconference?

You need full-motion videoconferencing equipment. This technology allows COSI and your class to see and hear each other in real-time. Common manufacturers of this equipment include Tandberg, Polycom, and PictureTel. This is not web-casting, so you need more than a camera and a computer.

What are my options for methods of connecting to COSI?

COSI can accept ISDN calls (H.320 - via phone lines) from anywhere. We also can accept IP calls (H.323 - over the Internet), though the quality is not as good, and the connection is not as reliable as ISDN. Within the state of Ohio, we can connect to schools on the ATM network. A majority of our connections are made through a bridge at Ohio's Office of Information Technology (OIT) Video department. For good video quality, we strongly recommend a connection speed of 384 kbps or higher.
