Introduction to Autodesk Utility Design
Presented by: Walt Smith, Autodesk
Designing an electric utility network involves many steps that typically have manual and redundant operations in the workflow. Attendees to this session were given a full overview of Autodesk Utility Design and how it can help them improve process efficiency, increase accuracy, and save time and money when designing a network. Topics covered in the session were automatic engineering including secondary voltage drop, cable pulling analysis, conductor sag and pole guying, creating network sketches, calculating labor and material costs, as well as automatically ordering necessary equipment.
Attendees also learned about Autodesk’s end-to-end GIS solution for electric utilities. From planning to engineering, from design and construction to operations, maintenance, and billing, Autodesk’s electric utility solution equips enterprises with the tools and data-sharing capability to power technical tasks and executive decisions. To close the session, Dennis McCombs of Nevada Power Company presented the business case and strategy for their recent Autodesk Utility Design implementation and how it helped them create more accurate and consistent designs in less time.
Managing Emergencies with Autodesk MapGuide
Presented by: Mike Parsons, CADD Centers of Florida
When emergencies strike, making fast, informed decisions is often the difference between life and death. Emergency personnel need fast access to up-to-date floor plans, site photos, hazardous material storage permits, and other tactical information so it can be quickly analyzed and acted on. Key to this is true web-based support and a powerful distribution application. In this general design session, Parsons explored how emergency response organizations, including, fire, ambulance, and police, can use Autodesk MapGuide to help deliver critical data to where it is urgently needed. Attendees also learned the steps necessary to evaluate how Autodesk MapGuide can benefit their organization as well as how 3rd party technology can further extend the benefits of Autodesk MapGuide.
Autodesk Map: More than a GIS Solution
Presented by: Alex Lepeska, AT&T Broadband
To many users of CAD-based data at AT&T Broadband, a map merely represented a relational location on a map or a geo-coded location reference. To get more value from this data, AT&T Broadband looked further than just the technical data. In this session, attendees were given an inside look at AT&T Broadband’s GIS challenges and business opportunities, and how their innovative deployment of Autodesk Map enabled them to get more from their data for billing, customer service, and more. Though his is a communications-oriented deployment, Lepeska showed those in attendance how the benefits realized and the lessons learned at AT&T Broadband can be transferred for use in GIS deployments in other industries.
Advanced Autodesk GenMap
Presented by: Mike Preston, Autodesk
The ability to easily create and update detailed maps of physical assets in real time, either from blue prints or data collected on-site, is critical to electric utility companies. In this electric utility focused session, Preston gave those in attendance a step-by-step slide and demo presentation of Autodesk GenMap, including model connectivity, data integrity checks, and visual connectivity for mapping electric utility networks. Preston also highlighted the importance and benefits of having a data model and demonstrated advanced features of Autodesk GenMap, such as GeoCode, change phase, and customer outage and switching, which are critical to the general maintenance of the model after it is completed and validated. In addition, Preston showed how after the data model is completed using Autodesk GenMap, the data can be used in every department of the utility, helping contribute to overall enterprise asset management.
Citywide GIS: Start-to-Finish w/ Autodesk GIS Land. Focuses on White Plains, NY, and its use of Map, Land Desktop, Survey, Raster Design, and MapGuide
Presenter: John Cooke and Barry Kelly, City of White Plains, New York
When the City of White Plains, New York needed to get more from its GIS data, it turned to Autodesk to help them reach their goals. They wanted a citywide GIS infrastructure to handle a wide variety of tasks for determining where an owner’s property is versus a right of way, updating City Clerk’s voter map, map and input generation, maintain street index maps, and more. In this session, Cooke and Kelly showed attendees the various processes and steps it took to bring the city to a modern GIS approach. Included in the session was how they leveraged existing data from Genasys (Unix, minicomputer), tips and tricks with data management, data preparation, and how to take advantage of the power and functionality of Autodesk Map, Land Desktop, Survey, CAD Overlay, and MapGuide to build a citywide GIS infrastructure.
