Day 4 (November 30, 2001) - Overview of Friday's presentations, Autodesk's GIS User Conference

Autodesk Solutions for the Communications Industry
Presented by: Sean Curry, Autodesk
The communications industry is undergoing significant change through deregulation,
mergers, and acquisitions. According to Curry, the drive to increase profits through
reduced operating costs presents both challenges and opportunities for GIS and CAD
professionals. In this session, Curry described some of these challenges and provided
real-world examples of how communications companies have reduced their costs
with solutions built on Autodesk's infrastructure management solutions. Whether its
copper, broadband, or wireless communications networks, Curry showed attendees
how the design and management capabilities of Autodesk's Infrastructure
Management solutions can help them streamline their operations to reduce costs.
Road Reconstruction and Widening with Autodesk Civil Solutions
Presented by John Cooke, Barry Kelly of Hoyle, Tanner and Associates, Inc.
Those in attendance at this session were given an overview of various applications
for Autodesk civil solutions in contemporary corridor design. While emphasis is often
placed on new road design, Cooke noted the reality is that most current corridor
design projects involve improvement, redesign and widening of existing
infrastructure. Topics included effective utilization of profile and cross-section tools in
widening, milling and overlay applications, as well as lane configuration changes
through superelevated sections. The use of lane and superelevation profiles were
also examined and the Grading Object and 3D capabilities of the software were
introduced as solutions for intersection, ramp multi-alignment applications. The
session also examined the use of the Sheet Manager for preparation of deliverable
drawings, using standards prepared for representative West- and East-Coast DOT's.
Technical Visualization for use in Public Hearings
Presented by: Harry Ward, OutSource, Inc.
According to Ward, 3D models, computer renderings, photomontages, animations
and video montages suitable for display to the public are typically used for
communicating complex civil engineering projects and concepts. The difference
between these graphics and the pictures the public normally views are that these are
technically correct images. They are modeled directly from engineering data,
construction plans or other verifiable information. In addition to being displayed at
public hearings, according to Ward, these technical visualizations can also be used
for important purposes such as conveying forensic data to juries or for simple
matters such as responding to government Requests For Proposal. Ward showed how
Autodesk Land Desktop has the ability to visualize project data thus allowing the
user to combine the credibility of an engineer with the influence of high-tech
graphics.
City of Dublin, OH and their Municipal GIS with Autodesk Products
Presented by: Vance Cerasini, City of Dublin, OH
The general public and business community in the City of Dublin, Ohio expect the
municipality to provide efficient, cost-effective city services. But a major challenge
was how utilize GIS systems and data to support them, including how to make that
data easily available. Cerasini gave attendees to this session an overview of how the
City of Dublin's development department met this challenge head-on by enhancing
its state-of-the-art geographic information system (GIS) with satellite imagery to
increase productivity, improve engineering and map data, and enhance customer
service.
Using the web-distribution and sharing capabilities of Autodesk MapGuide, Dublin's
GIS now serves all city departments and divisions with data to more than 200 users.
Cerasini also illustrated how using MapGuide, Dublin built an infrastructure that
encourages departments and divisions to exchange information freely, allowing them
to maintain their own data within the enterprise framework, while still feeding the
GIS systems. Cerasini gave attendees the details of how they accomplished this and
how such an approach benefits everyone in the process.
