Intergraph G/Electric Lights the Way at Kansas City Power and Light
Electric Company Boosts Systems Integration

DENVER, March 28, 2000 - Intergraph Corporation and Kansas City Power and Light (KCPL) today announced that KCPL will capitalize on their 3-year Intergraph technology investment by upgrading their successful FRAMME-based Geospatial Resource Management (GRM) system to Intergraph's new GFramme-based solution, G/Electric. The new technology, with its open architecture, will give KCPL more flexibility and more opportunities to integrate their geospatial offering with other business-critical systems.

KCPL relies on their automated mapping/facilities management/geographic information system (AM/FM/GIS) as the core to their corporate Distribution Automation (DA) system. The DA system includes tools for geospatial and facilities management, outage management, engineering analysis, automated meter reading and work management. A major goal for KCPL and the driving force behind their decision to move to G/Electric is the need to more tightly integrate these various systems.

According to KCPL manager of graphics technologies and services, Paul Sells, "In the past, we've had a standalone planning design system that didn't interface to our mapping solutions. When our planners augmented or created new electric network components, they'd have to make 30 copies of the new design, which would then be disseminated throughout engineering and construction and finally to mapping and dispatch. Then, when the plans had been implemented, mapping would get the marked up versions of the as-constructed work and have to re-draw the job in FRAMME."

KCPL's ultimate vision is to integrate all these business-critical tools into a single, integrated design environment. Sells believes that Intergraph's G/Electric solution will enable them to achieve this goal.

Creating an integrated design environment will streamline this process and enable KCPL to fully automate their process. Together, KCPL and Intergraph are reviewing the current FRAMME project, and taking advantage of KCPL's experience and success to incorporate best practices into the G/Electric product. Kevin Hitt, Intergraph vice president of energy solutions, commented, "KCPL has been very successful with their FRAMME system, and I'm very pleased that they've chosen to be our first FRAMME customer to transition to G/Electric. One of KCPL's main objectives is to implement design aids within their GRM system. This is tremendous opportunity both to provide a greater return on investment for KCPL and to create a new tool that the industry as a whole will benefit from."

KCPL plans to automate their corporation with mobile solutions by 2001. G/Electric will be critical in meeting this goal, as well as in extending the technology to business applications, including facility reporting by tax district. Ed Hedges, principal analyst, KCPL, said, "Because FRAMME stores geospatial information in the graphics, it's been difficult to do spatial analysis. G/Electric moves the geospatial component to the database, which lets us perform spatial analyses more easily, and consequently, enables us to provide more 'products' to our corporate end-users - especially field engineers and business operations."
