Editor's Notes From The Floor
Tuesday, March 28, 2000

Hello from Denver Colorado. We've been here for a couple of days now and its apparent that I'm going to be very busy in the near future following up on lots of new GIS products and developments by many of the industries key players (and some new ones).

An OLYMPIC Lesson:

The "official" kickoff to the conference took place Monday afternoon at the keynote address. To start, GITA 2000 Excellence Awards were presented to representatives from Carolina Power and Light, and Mid American Energy. This was followed by a very motivational presentation from Olympic hero Dan Jansen, winner of Olympic Gold in 1994. Dan shared memories of his Olympic experiences dating from 1984 and culminating with gold in 1994. We were reminded by Dan not to dwell on our competition but to be aware of them and even learn from them.

He explained how we all need goals but sometimes looking and focusing on the end result or "looking at the top of the peak" may not be the best way to reach our goals. He reminds us that we have to take our journey 10 steps at a time and that goals are reached by completing numerous smaller tasks and that this is where are focus should be.

Finally, we're all going to have set backs and not to get quickly discouraged. We should all learn the difference between getting "knocked down" and "knocked out." This message was really driven home when we watched a series of setbacks and disappointing races that he took part in over the years. Of course, we all know that after ten years of frustration Dan capped off a dramatic career with Olympic gold in the final race of his career. It was obvious that everyone was "pumped" when it was time to leave!

The exhibition hall of the conference is now open and vendors are pulling out all kinds of intriguing ways to get our attention - even offering a BWM as a prize! Look for some commentaries from the exhibition hall in our next update from the floor at GITA in Denver, CO.

Late Monday evening you may have noticed that we posted some news updates in our GITA section of the website spatialnews.geocomm.com/events/gita along with a brief summary of the day's events and announcements. If you haven't checked it out already take some time to visit the GITA section of our site and look for our news feed to return to normal on Thursday.

My next stop is the exhibition hall where I'll be meeting one on one with a number of vendors to get an up close look at their new products. I am looking forward to seeing new products from Intergraph, Autodesk, iMedeon, Convergent Group, imWork, Tobin, ESRI, Smallworld and others...

Look for summaries of my meetings, along with detailed product information to follow in the next 7-10 days. In addition, check back often as we update our GITA webpage with more daily summaries and news announcements from the floor.
