On The Street!
We're continuing to share stories about SpatialNews around the globe.
"On The Street" gives you chance to share your experience with
thousands of other GIS/Mapping professionals just like you. We want to showcase "real life"
stories from SpatialNews readers. These are highlights of GIS or mapping projects that people are working
on right now. Here we will bring you the opinions of the people who are working "hands-on" with the projects. This will be a great opportunity to get an idea how people around the world, from various disciplines,
are working with GIS technologies.

California Project LEAN
Kristi Koumjian is a graduate student assistant with the Department of Health
Services, Project LEAN Web Based GIS Application project.
California Project LEAN (Leaders Encouraging Activity and Nutrition), a
program of the California Department of Health Services and the Public
Health Institute, is in the process of creating a web based GIS application.
Users who log onto the California Project LEAN website will be able to
integrate and visualize valuable public health information in a user-
friendly manner. With this web application, one will be able to create
maps, visualize scenarios and effectively identify the health needs of low-
income Californians. Data categories that will be mapped in the web
application include: major California cities, highways and roads, grocery
stores, WIC vendors, certified farmer’s markets, public schools that offer
health and nutrition programs, information on teen pregnancy and
community challenge grants as well as census bureau data. Users will also
be able to access the extensive database that contains all of the information
that is contained in this site. For more details please consult the California
Project LEAN website at
www.dhs.ca.gov/lean or contact Kristi Koumjian
at kkoumjia@dhs.ca.gov.

Simon Fraser University - UniGIS
Simon Fraser University, located in Vancouver, BC is a member of the UniGIS
consortium, which encompasses 14 countries and about 20 universities around
the world cooperating in the design and delivery in distance learning in
GIS. The programs focus on the design and implementation of GIS in real
world situations.

The City of Scottsdale
Mark Ledbetter, GIS Director, City of Scottsdale AZ. tells us about
The City of Scottsdale GIS-based Internet site, named the Digital Map Center (DMC). The DMC is
composed of 2 applications - the Land Information Web and the Digital Print
Room.
The Land Information Web is an Autodesk MapGuide based application that
delivers GIS land (parcels, streets, easements, aerial photos) information
to the public. The site allows map navigation by address, intersection,
parcel number, or map sheet.
The Digital Print Room is an Intergraph IPLOT based application that
delivers static map prints to the public, replacing hard-copy prints that
could be purchased previously. The URL to the Digital Map Center is:
http://maproom.ci.scottsdale.az.us/cosmap.
Pacific GeoTech Systems
Andy Lang of Pacific GeoTech Systems Ltd. tells us of a growing web-based mapping and GIS
company established 1996, based in Victoria, British Columbia Canada.
The company provides a broad range of cost-effective GIS/Mapping services and enterprise solutions, including web map publishing, innovative spatial web sites, turn-key custom GIS application development and support, and geospatial data integration, translation and conversion.
The company uses GeoMedia Web Map/Enterprise, Bentley ModelServer Discovery to implement web based GIS solutions.
The project that put Pacific GeoTech "on the map" came when the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs
awarded the company a contract to develop quality assurance routines and procedures to
correct multiple provincial land data sets (Forest Cover, Terrain Resource Information
Management, Cadastral Data Management System, Mineral Tenure, Forest Atlas Mapping
Automation) and data conditioning for the BC Treaty Negotiation Process with BC First
Nations. Their website can be found at
