Earthquakes Around The World - 2000

By SpatialNews
The ESRI Schools and Libraries program website is host to loads of material that will appeal to many GIS users. Myself, I'm always on the look for interesting data products - I guess I'm a bit of a data hound! One product I recently found at the ESRI k-12 site is a historial database or earthquake occurrences from around the globe. The data is stored by year (1998-2000 are available for download). The data is provided as a tab delimited textfile database. The year 2000 data consits of over 46,000 earthquake events of magnitude 1.0 or higher, from around the world. Attributes associated with each record include the date, time, latitude, longitude, depth, and magnitude. The database can be easily incorporated into views in ArcView GIS or ArcVoyager (or any other desktop mapping program) as an event theme. ESRI suggests that users explore the pattern of quakes greater than and less than 3.0 magnitude for interesting results.

These data, and data for other timeframes, are also available from the catalog on the website of the Council of the National Seismic System. The CNSS provides historical seimic data as well as maps showing the distribution of seismicity.
