Canadians working in the U.S. and Obtaining a TN Visa
By Glenn Letham
Where can I get a TN Visa Approved?
TN-1 applications are available from special NAFTA officers located at
any Class A Point of entry or international airport or PFI location (ie. major airports,
border crossings, and pre-clearance facilities). Important, call your planned border crossing or facility to ensure that they do in fact handle NAFTA entry permits - not all of them do!
The legal term for these facilities is "Class A" land ports of entry.
At "renewal", a TN may be extended by a mail in application (this is not a new TN), or you return to
the border and get a new TN. A TN-1 renewal by mail can take up to 90 days to process.
Initial TNs must be obtained (except if already in the US in another status) at a Port of Entry.
Canadians seeking TN-1 approval by mail MUST send their application to the following address:
US I.N.S
Northern Service Center
Lincoln Nebraska, USA
PO Box 82521
68501
What Is The Cost?
There is a filing fee of US $50 and $6 for I-94 (at land Point of entries only, otherwise its included in airfare).
An I-94 is a card that is stapled to your passport stating that you have a TN-1 classification.
Essentially, to the Visa holder, the I-94 is the visa - guard it with your life!
