Using GIS to Competitive Advantage

Michael DeLacy, President of Microdesk, discusses how North East Optic Network designs and manages their fiber optic cable network with automatic Web-based updates to gain a competitive advantage. Week 5: January 11, January 13, 12-1 p.m. EST
Georgia Power Company
When you handle thousands of kilowatts a day, your GIS solution had better be just as powerful. Richard B. Burroughs, III, PE of Jorge Cabrera, explains how Georgia Power Company harnesses the Intranet to place 90,000 maps online to more than 5,000 employees. This session explores how Georgia Power leveraged their existing AutoCAD drawings with Autodesk MapGuide to build an amazing network.

Week 6: January 18, January 20, 12-1 p.m. EST
Mapping Analyzing and Distributing Facilities Data with Time Warner Putting the maps on Time Warner. Chuck Pietra, New Business Unit Manager at Avatech Solutions, shows you how Time Warner Communications manipulates the Internet and a graphical user interface to access data directly from Oracle and SQL Server Databases. The session will also highlight system-wide integration of Sipre GIS and SipreCAD, with AutoCAD Map and Autodesk MapGuide.

Week 7: January 25, January 27, 12-1 p.m. EST
Vehicle Tracking and Fleet Management
GIS in orbit. Robert Colm, President of Sigba S.A., explains how, in only three months, Skycom, located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, implemented a vehicle tracking system using the ORBCOMM satellites. This Autodesk MapGuide vehicle tracking system uses the satellites to process the exact location of each vehicle, display it in real time on a dynamic interactive map, calculate distances to the next location on route, send and receive remote messages, and provide access protection and control.

Week 8: February 1, February 3, 12-1 p.m. EST
Pima County, Arizona
Getting onto the Internet and staying there. Over a two-year period, Pima County has implemented an incredible Internet based GIS system. Moderators Jack Lloyd, GIS Manager, and John Dickson, Database Specialist, of Pima County, Arizona focus on how Pima County leverages its current GIS software and data investment with Autodesk MapGuide to dramatically reduce the number of map requests.

Week 9: February 8, February 10, 12-1 p.m. EST
GIS for City Planners and Council
Big city plans. Small town applications. J. Lance Maidlow, M. Eng., P. Eng., and President of Kanotech Information Systems Ltd., details ways GIS can be implemented by city planners, city councils, and smaller communities. He discusses the new program, CivicCenter, an Autodesk and Microsoft program, which provides open, fully documented database models and applications for property and facility information that can be used by all the members of local government.

Week 10: February 15, February 17, 12-1 p.m. EST
Improving Service and Reducing Costs
Good-bye, regulations. Hello, competition. As electric utilities are deregulated, the need to stay competitive becomes even more important. See how to leverage your GIS data to fine-tune customer service and cut costs. Plus, learn about the new integrated power outage management application from Autodesk, PowerLine.

Week 11: February 22, February 24, 12-1 p.m. EST
Integrating GIS and GPS for Vehicle Tracking
Staying on track with GIS. Michael Tooker, President of Dolphin Technologies, shares how his company handles its vehicle and fleet tracking and how they integrated sophisticated gyro equipment to track problem points. The session also focuses on the use of GPS and Web-based GIS as management tools.

Week 12: February 29, March 2, 12-1 p.m. EST
Denver Water
Mile-high GIS. Dan Genrich, Information Services Project Manager of Denver Water, shows how Denver Water created its first Internet driven MapGuide application. Almost every division within Denver Water can access their GIS data over the Internet. The system was created in less than two weeks and new users can even be trained in little over an hour.
