For those of you who were fortunate enough to register in time, the latest in a series of 12 exciting on-line GIS seminars was held Tuesday, January 11 at GeonetCom.com

This seminar gave us a look at the Georgia Power Company's Internet Mapping System and was presented by Mr. Richard Burroughs, and Mr. Jorge Cabrera, both of Applied Software. Burroughs and Cabrera explained how The Georgia Power Company harnesses the Intranet to place 90,000 maps online, making them available to more than 5,000 employees. This session also looked at how Georgia Power leveraged their existing AutoCAD drawings with Autodesk MapGuide to build an amazing network.

The initial poll of seminar attendees revealed the following characteristics of the audience:
Q - What GIS platform do you work with:
  • Autodesk Products 62%
  • Microstation 4%
  • ESRI 22%
  • Mapinfo 5%
  • Other 6%
  • Q - At what stage are you presently at as far as Internet/Intranet Map Publishing

  • Completed/Deployed 15%
  • Under Development 30%
  • Under Consideration 23%
  • Information Gathering 15%
  • N/A 15%

  • The presentation began with Mr. Burroughs offering up a brief historical time line of Georgia Power Coporation's. mapping system. He indicated that they initially moved to a proprietary application in 1980. It wasn't until 1986 that they moved to an AutoCAD platform and developed an internal Automated Map Collection (AMC) System. After that they had planned on migrating to a ARC/INFO environment, however, they decided against this route based on the cost and time associated with such a move. In 1997 they implemented their existing CADMAP System and in 1998 the AMC release 6 was completed.

    Problems to be resolved
The Georgia Power Company's existing web mapping system is composed of over 90,000 maps. They use their MapGuide system to aid in managing the daily updates of 100 maps on most days. They have a need for timely updating by field personnel and data resides in a variety of databases. Their overall goal is to publish current maps of data related to power distribution and make them available on real time demand.

The strategy they decided upon was to migrate their existing paper map holdings to digital media. They would then post daily updates, submit electronic field notes, and link all of their attribute data to electronic DWG drawings.

    Data Issues
GPC manages over 90,000 digital map files with their system. They use AutoCAD ActiveX Automation and VB, as well as Oracle data, and SDF drawing files. Original source base data was derived from Georgia DOT street/Highway data. This was obtained in ESRI format, the data was enhanced, and finally converted to SDF format. Other data captured and used in the system includes transmission equipment, TCMS, customer, and lightning data.

    System Architecture
The system architecture is defined by a web server, MapGuide Browser, Data (Cold Fusion, ORACLE), and client browser (Internet Explorer). Privileges are assigned and are used to determined whether they can redline, edit, and save data. Generally, edits are made to the map data based on field notes and redlining, server and conversion routines are run, and finally, revised SDF files are created which reflect the revisions.

The presenters then walked us through some spatial queries, displayed the results, and generated custom reports. All this was done "live" with the data being presented in the MapGuide viewing environment. Examples were offered showing related images and spatial data was displayed on top of an aerial photo. Sample screen shots are offered in the following examples listed below:

In their closing remarks, the presenters indicated that an important asset of the MapGuide based system is that they are not restricted to using Autodesk data. The system is very useful for publishing GIS data that exists in a number of different data formats and supports attribute data residing in ORACLE and a variety of other database systems.

Mapping Analyzing and Distributing Facilities Data with Time Warner - Putting maps on Time Warner

    January 18, January 20, 12-1 p.m. EST
Chuck Pietra, New Business Unit Manager at Avatech Solutions, shows you how Time Warner Communications manipulates the Internet and a graphical user interface to access data directly from Oracle and SQL Server Databases. The session will also highlight system-wide integration of Sipre GIS and SipreCAD, with AutoCAD Map and Autodesk MapGuide.
