ArcPad 5 Unveiled at CeBIT
ESRI Brings Mapping and GIS into the Field

Redlands, California--ESRI, the world leader in geographic information system (GIS) software, unveiled ArcPad 5 today at the CeBIT world fair in Hannover, Germany. ArcPad is a handheld personal mapping and GIS application. ArcPad enhances portable touch-screen computers with intuitive mapping, GIS, and global positioning system (GPS) functionality. CeBIT highlights the latest trends in information technology (IT) and telecommunications and is often the place where product innovations are unveiled.

ArcPad leverages existing mapping and GIS software systems and databases. There is no need to convert data to unique portable formats. When a user is finished editing data in the field, changes and additions can be uploaded into the master database in the office. ArcPad supports industry-standard vector map (Shapefiles) and raster image displays (MrSID imaging language by LizardTech) that include aerial photos and satellite imagery. Moreover, ArcPad allows users to create custom input forms from their existing GIS database for use in the field.

ArcPad can also be integrated with an optional GPS or differential global positioning system. ArcPad enhances GPS technology by not limiting the position information displayed to numerical coordinates, but to a moving crosshair on an actual map. This enables users to view their GPS position in the context of a map.

ArcPad enables specialized mapping and data collection in a wide range of industries and applications including power pole maintenance and meter reading for utility companies, vehicle tracking, mineral exploration, habitat studies, crop management, and property damage assessment.

Availability

ArcPad will be available on Windows CE 2.11, 95/98, NT, and 2000 platforms in March 2000. Supported Windows CE devices include Aero from Compaq, Cassiopeia from Casio, and Jornada from HP. The ArcPad Software Development Kit, scheduled for release in summer 2000, will give developers the ability to build custom field mapping solutions using powerful ArcPad components.

For more information or to order ArcPad, visit www.esri.com/arcpad, contact your local ESRI regional office, or call 1-800-447-9778. Outside the United States, please contact your local distributor. For more information on CeBIT, contact ESRI-Germany at our Hannover office at 49-511-33416-0 or e-mail info@ESRI-Germany.de.

ArcPad currently supports Trimble GPS receivers within the United States. Outside the United States, ArcPad is GPS-enabled for all GPS receivers using a NMEA format.
