Service Technicians Use ArcFM Viewer in the Field for Optimized Performance
Alliant Energy Deploys Advanced Mobile GIS
Redlands, California-Alliant Energy has implemented an advanced mobile GIS as part of its
overall ArcFM geographic information system (GIS). The advanced technology automates and
streamlines how information is used in the field and ultimately results in better customer service.
“Alliant Energy is a leader in using modern information technology solutions in a number of
areas, and its mobile GIS is a good example,” said Jeff Rashid, Utility Solutions Group, ESRI.
“Business innovation starts with a clear understanding of what is needed to serve customers
better and to empower employees with tools for doing optimal work. Alliant Energy
demonstrates this innovation and leads the way in employing groundbreaking solutions.”
Alliant Energy implemented ESRI’s GIS at its Wisconsin utility, Wisconsin Power and Light
(WPL). The company had previously used several manual tracking systems and stand-alone
mainframe computers to manage gas and electric facility and customer information. The
implemented GIS integrated data from several legacy systems into one seamless enterprise
database for electric, gas, and water facility information. The enterprise GIS supports
engineering, operations, system planning, property accounting, and maintenance planning
functions throughout the utility subsidiary. ArcFM Viewer is being used by nearly 300 users in
these business areas.
The next phase of its GIS implementation involves a mobile GIS application based on
ArcFM Viewer. This is a desktop GIS application designed to meet the needs of utility
businesses and replace cumbersome map books used by service technicians for various day-to-
day operations.
“In one year we plotted more than 750,000 maps,” says Ted Wadzinski, GIS Services
supervisor, Alliant Energy. “Keeping paper maps current using manual methods was very
costly. With ArcFM Viewer used in the field, we have access to the most accurate, up-to-
date information available in an automated fashion utilizing the very latest analytic and
display tools.”
ArcFM Viewer, used on laptop computers by field crews, helps Alliant Energy ensure a high
level of customer satisfaction by facilitating a quick response from electrical and gas technicians
to service outages.
“It is, by far, one of the most useful tools to help me with the daily job routines and
emergency response and restoration for our customers,” says John Zelinski, chief line technician,
Alliant Energy. “Now we have a system in place that enables us to open a map, and at our
fingertips we can access roads and addresses, electric and gas maps, and facility attributes.”
With ArcFM Viewer, a user simply enters either a location number, address, customer name,
premise number, or switch number, and the user can quickly and effectively navigate to the
premise. The user then has the gas and electric maps of the area and the equipment attributes of
the affected customer in digital format. The user can access information on affected assets such
as poles, conductors, and transformers. The end result is better customer service through high-
tech information management.
“The ArcFM system is user-friendly and easy to learn,” said Zelinski. “The benefits of this
technology reflect the vast improvements made in technology and equipment since I started
working with computer maps. The best part about the improvements is that we continue to
discover more ways to apply the systems, and it is making my job not only easier but also safer.”
For more than thirty years, ESRI has been the leading developer of geographic
information system (GIS) software with more than 220,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also
provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its
headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States,
international distributors in more than ninety countries, and more than 900 resellers and

quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference
in the world around them. ESRI can be found on the Web at www.esri.com.
